Can someone give me a really quick run down the these tests? We have no experience with ACT, but know quite a bit more about the SAT. GC said D may want to add ACT to her testing schedule. Advantages? Disadvantages?

Some people are better at one or the other. Only way to find out is try a practice test for both.

My personal opinion: I believe ACT math is more straightforward. Reading is about same depending on passages, SAT Writing > ACT Writing and the ACT science is not as difficult as people make it seem

Well, first of all, ACT is more ‘logic-based’. ACT has four sections: Reading (verbal in SAT), English (writing in SAT), essay, mathematics and science.

ACT math includes advanced trigonometry, whereas SAT doesn’t. However, I find that I have more time to do ACT math than SAT math.

ACT has a science section composed of 40 questions, pretty much based on analyzing graphs and stuff. The questions are pretty easy, and as I said before, logical.

ACT English secion is extremely EASY. It takes me about 20 minutes to finish up 75 questions , so I have about extra 25 mins. However, I always feel that I don’t have enough time to complete all the questions.

Now, for the essay part, the prompts/topics given in ACT exams are pretty much about the issues occuring nowadays, (ex. dress codes, having fashion/gossip magazines at school libraries, etc), whereas SAT prompts are more complicated (ex. conventional wisdom, self-esteem, etc) Also, you get thirty minutes for writing an ACT essay.

Good luck, and I think your daughter should take practice ACT tests and see how it goes.

Janey

oops I meant to say the ACT Writing section, (correcting the grammar) which I believe is called English is easier than SAT writing
