i was wondering if anyone knew of any good SAT prep books for vocabulary (like the ones that usually have words that show up the most often on the SAT). if you know of any good books, please answer these questions:

which book?

why is it good/why did you like it?

approx. how much did you improve?

You can get those novels by sparknotes that have the vocab words in them.

What I did, I was given a list of 250 words that are on the SAT and worked through them (came with worksheets). Then I started to use them and identify them in everyday life. It REALLY helped a lot! :) I like sounding smart, lol.

Learning vocabulary doesn't help much, if at all. You'll only come across one or two questions where it comes in handy. Your time is better spent practicing other parts of the SAT.

^ i know, i always thought it was a waste of time to learn vocab because if i learn 98593875 words, chances are that probably just a few of them would show up on the SAT. however, i think that for me, learning vocab would be the most advantageous because i've already done some prep and my math and writing sections are already pretty strong. my lowest score is always the CR section.. not because of the passages, but because i usually miss over half the vocab on each section =( so yah, for me, the best bet is probably improving vocab =/ thanks for the advice though =)

Uh... no. If I didn't learn vocab, I wonder what my CR score would be!

Don't learn like 1,000 words! I learned 250 which didn't seem like a lot to me. That few 250 was enough! Here's what you can do if you don't have a "appears most" list.

When you are practicing your SATs, mark the words on the SC that you don't know and learn them because a lot of times those words are used again.

I used satwords.com. It helped build a good base of vocab, it will by no means cover every word you will see on the SAT's. As far as my experience with the SAT's go these words helped a LOT with the old sat but collegeboard seems to have caught on to the fact that a lot of companies knew the frequently occuring words by now, and i would say the vocab on the new sats can get pretty damn difficult no matter how much prep you do.

I'm using Sparknotes' 1,000 Most Common SAT Words.. And it's been helping A LOT so far. I'm about 1/7 finished, and I already notice a difference when I take practice tests.
If someone were to memorize between 900-1,000 of these words, I bet they'd get all or almost all of the sentence completions correct.. Almost everything sentence completion I've seen contains one or more of the words on this list.. So at least if you don't know all the answer choices, you can use process of elimination.
