I'm confused about the difference between the SAT and SAT subject tests (if there is a difference) and which i need to take. Can someone please clarify? Thanks!!

The SAT is mandatory at almost all colleges unless you have taken the ACT (it's the test out of 2400 points, college admissions test)

The SAT subject tests are--like their name implies--subject specific. You can take US History, Chemistry, Spanish, Math level 2, etc...there are quite a few of these, for a comprehensive list go to www.collegeboard.com ...These tests are mandatory at top schools, optional everywhere else.

Thanks!!! So one does not replace the other i have to take the test the college specifically requires?

Most colleges require you to take ACTs OR SATs. Subject tests are just extras that a college may or may not require (you should look at the college's admissions site to find out).

edit: I just got what you were asking, and no, subject tests may not substitute for the SATs, sorry =P
