SAT Writing: Function of "Thus"

When ever I do practice tests, I always am discouraged when I see answer's with the word "Thus"

I have picked answers with that word in the past and gotten the question wrong which has made me question whether I truly understand the word and its function or not.

"My dad had gone to jail several times in the past, thus he could not get hired for a job."

Is that correct usage?

Can someone explain to me what thus means thoroughly and provide a few (like 5) example sentences?

ALSO:

this is just small and I know it wont show up on the SAT, but Erica Meltzer said NOT TO PLACE A PERIOD BEFORE "HOWEVER," ONLY A SEMICOLON. I have used however to begin my sentences before and nobody has penalized me for it, so is it correct or not?
(ie: I like pears. However, I hate when they get soggy and brown.)

After finishing Meltzer’s yesterday I was enlightened that there are such things as “semi colon conjunction” so i figured that maybe “thus” was one of those…

thank you so much for your reply! im surprised i couldn’t find the answer easily by simply searching on google…
