SAT Writing

Does Cornell not look at the writing or does it weight it less? I ask because after looking at various sources, I could not find one that showed the statistics for the average writing score on the SAT.

It’s weighted less for sure. Different colleges may place different priorities on it though. For example, CoE’s website states “While less emphasis is placed on this component of the application, writing is an essential tool for engineering as a necessary skill for all Cornell students.”

Cornell does not post W stats anywhere that they post SAT stats, but they did record the W score on the applicant’s portal. I thought that was interesting since they claim they do not look at the W score. Another college my son applied to did not post W score on its portal.

Am not sure that you can interpret anything from this other than the fact that the Ad Com will see your W score.

thank you for your responses

A very similar question was posed at an info session we attended. The answer that was given was that all scores are looked at and considered by the adcom. The writing score is best used to evaluate your essays. It is expected that an SAT writing score of 750-800 should have essays that are representative of the scores. They can also evaluate that a lower score (SAT writing of 500) with amazing essays "may’ have had additional outside assistance with essays. In short, yes the SAT writing is looked at and considered for admissions.

I think we asked this when my daughter was applying last year. My daughter has a relatively low W score compared to her CR and Math. They said that they don’t consider it “officially”, but the reader of the application can see it.

low W score is not going to hurt all too much if CR and M are very good, and a high W score is never a bad thing.

I hope they all count, and truthfully, if I were on AdComm, I would most certainly look at it. I would also compare the writing score with how well written were the essays, as a poor writing score does potentially put into question who authored the essays.

I read somewhere before that Yale adcoms look at CR score to determine the authenticity of the essay, not sure about Cornell though.

My writing score sucks compared to my CR. CR score above average, and Writing is below average. I wonder how they’ll look at it. Anyone know if AP English scores can play a role anywhere?
