Ok, so I took the SAT for the third time in May and I did hideously:

720CR
730M (should be getting 800)
670W (ridiculous, usually get full marks for the MCs - 8 on the essay.. let down)

That makes a 2120..
I know I can get 800 for M, and possibly a 800 for W. CR is really as good as it is going to get for me though.

Does UMich accept score choice? If so, should I retake for a 4th time? Also, thats make 1450 CR + M (1490 Super-score).. so does it only look at CR+M?

You know…so many people on CC write these kind of threads that just come off completely conceited and arrogant. I don’t know why people do that. Not trying to be personal by posting on this particular thread, but I mean come on, 2120 is “hideous”? What is your point? Is this a thinly veiled request for compliments?

Not at all. I find it hideous because I lost out on a possible 2300 because I messed up the essay and only the essay, and I made 3 mistakes on the Math. I do not want any comments, I really just want to know what you guys would do when you are stuck in a double edged sword situation like me - do the SAT again and possibly get a much higher score, but look bad on the whole.

^^^
With those hideous SAT scores I think you should forget about Michigan and look at a community college for a few years until you get your act together.

I don’t think you sound conceited at all. You shouldn’t take anything back.

For the rest of you, some of us have high standards, so deal with it. You aren’t contributing anything helpful acting like that. I don’t see anyone’s arrogance coming out, but I definitely see insecurity and possibly jealousy.

I’m curious as to why you are so sure that you can get 800s on two sections when you haven’t after taking it 3 times. I’m not doubting you, but it is something to think about. That being said, if you are completely confident you can get a 2300 I would go for it if I were in your situation. Taking the SAT 3 times is already a lot. I don’t think you’d be shooting yourself in the foot by taking it a 4th time (but this is just my opinion; ask more people). Good luck.

In my experience, UM does not place a huge emphasis on test scores (I think engin and Ross place much more of an emphasis on them than LS&A). Right now, your test scores can definitely get you in; but, like you said, they could also be better. If you want to know if UM superscores, just call up the admissions office and ask them.

I was confident I could get 800s because I have a lot of maths distinctions and awards and I am good at math. I have always lost out on that elusive 800 because of petty mistakes. As for writing, I wasn’t that good but I practiced and now I get full marks on the multiple choice almost every time. The only thing that holds me back is the essay and I feel that if I write a killer essay I can get that 800.

If I were in your situation, I would retake it.

You could also try taking the ACT if you are worried that taking a standardized test multiple times looks bad. I already said this, but I don’t think there is a big difference between taking the SAT 3 times or 4 times. However, I think there is a big difference between ~2100 and ~2300 and that this difference more than offsets taking it 4 times vs. 3 times.

I’m pretty sure you choose which scores to send and which not to send. It’s up to you, but a 2120 is not going to stop you from getting in. If your GPA is high then you’ll get in.

Ha, pancakes, if your going to call me jealous, do it in my face. I got into the engineering program and I had 3.9/32 act. Hardly any reason for me to be jealous. It just seems so egoistic when someone on CC makes a thread about all these accomplishments, stellar stats, and then act like something is really wrong/beg for assurances/etc.

Its like that one kid you always have in a class where he comes to your face crying about how he’s massively screwed for the test today and then gets a 96% on it.

How does retaking the SAT make you look bad? Unless you take it like 5+ times (which shows you are desperate), there is absolutely nothing wrong with retaking it.

And keep in mind U of M places greater emphasis on your GPA. Unless it is awful there is no reason why you can’t get in.

collegebound guy, you may not be jealous, but you are a being mean. There’s no reason to randomly attack people like that. It may seem egotistical, but here is what I think is really going on: the bottom line is that college admissions are incredibly competitive, so it’s easy for people to freak out about their stats because they honestly think it will have a significant impact on their future. Combined with high standards self-imposed, peer-imposed, and parentally-imposed, it should not be difficult to understand how this type of personality emerges. Instead of making fun of them, you could try educating them.

Seriously, I think you’re good, even if OOS. Of 'course if you don’t mind spending $50 and a Saturday morning and really think you can do significantly better, go ahead and do it, but this isn’t anything you have to stress over.

I’m also going to go ahead and say apply the same to most of the other colleges you posted this same thread in.

Thanks a lot. Well I have basically got to understand that if I do significantly improve as I believe I can then I will be doing no harm at all. Thank you very much guys, tomorrow I shall begin attempting to change my SAT II registration in June to a SAT I.

Honestly, if I were you, I’d stop. You have to be pragmatic about standardized test taking and avoid the “I can definitely attain X score” or “I only made stupid mistakes”. After 3 attempts, I don’t see how a 4th will be any different.

i’d say go for it. For personal pride or whatever, you should definitely try getting an 800 on the math section especially you’re good at math. 70 pts is a huge difference, and you would be in good running for some merit scholarships if you have 2300 SAT

Ok maybe I was harsh, but saying that 2100+ is a hideous score in the face of thousands of high school applicants who want to, but cannot, get over 2000 on the SAT is just being a prick, intentional or not.

Are you taking the tests in actual timed conditions and taking all of the sections straight through? How many practice tests did you take in which you received between a 2250-2300? You might have been particularly successful with guesses on one test.

I took 6 tests with all scores between 2250-2300. I only did the Critical Reading and Writing sections because I presumed 800 for Math section - did not account for stupid mistakes. The conditions were timed and I usually finished 5 minutes early. I never guess more than 2-3 answers on the whole test and that is only for Critical Reading.

I will probably just focus on concentrating more for the Maths section and nabbing that essay for the Writing section for June because I have got the Critical Reading score that I wanted.
