SATs, URMs, and Colleges

For highly selective colleges, how does the SAT front compare among truly under-represented minorities (not counting Asians)?

I understand that, typically, URMs are compared with other URMs in the application process (correct me if I'm wrong).

So, are their SATs also compared among each other, or compared to the general SAT average the college likes to maintain? Do colleges go the extra mile to compare SATs of URMs to other SAT scores of URMs? Although I haven't read this in any admissions books, in fact I haven't seen any statistics ever on SATs of only URMs in an admitted freshman class, is there still a possibility?

The general consensus I've heard, to be elgible for admissions at highly selective universities, a given is that you're in the top 1-10% (possibly to 25%, given good circumstances) of your class, and have SAT section scores of above 700, at the least. These are what I've heard as the basics.

Since URMs tend to do worse on the SAT than others, are their lower scores (possibly in the low to mid 600 range) overlooked or compensated by the fact that they are a URM? Or are SATs evaluated by college average, and in the end, the fact that you're URM plays a role, not in each tidbit of the application?

Although I've never seen SAT figures in an admitted freshman class solely for URMs, I have heard that colleges, when calculating an SAT average, may remove certain URM's scores. Do they take this mindset, and accept a low score, knowing that they can "exaggerate" the average reported score if they need to?

Please answer honestly, I'm very curious as to how colleges up there in the ranks deal with lower scores from URMs, specifically.

Also, simple question: Are colleges taking the writing section into acct for the class of 07 this year? Do you think if someone had a higher W than CR, they could use that for the Verbal/Math comparison instead of CR?

I hate these damn sat's.

Since the writing component is very new to the SAT some colleges are stull up in the air as far as how they plan to use us. You may have to wait until october when the new common data sets come out to see if writing is included in their profiles.

As for the other part of your question, no they will not substitute writing for your CR (verbal) score
