I have a 10th grade student he is doing pretty good in his Honor classes and taking AP classes for 11th grade. For Honors classes is GPA calculated differently than regular classes? And we are also looking at SB admissions. If anyone were in this situation and got accepted how are the chances?? Thanks
In my experience, AP and Honor’s classes give a student a higher weighted GPA because of the level of difficulty of the classes. I would ask your guidance department how they handle this.
The rigor of classes a high school student takes does have a bearing on their application to any college, and Stony Brook is very generous in the AP credits they allow to be counted as credit.
I was just accepted and my weighted gpa was high because of the weight my school gave for honors and ap classes. This definitely improved my chances for Stony Brook, but if your gpa is low, don’t forget that your sat , recommendations, essays, and extracurriculars help your chances for admissions.
Thanks for your replies.
I’m pretty sure it depends on your school. I’m sure Stony takes your school environment and academics into account when they look at you. I came from one of the specialized high schools known for STEM and honors and AP classes were not weighted. Even after 11 aps, my overall average is still a 94. And the average gpa to get into stony from my school is around the mid 80s. So really, it depends on your school and as long as you’re doing well and challenging yourself, then you’re fine academically.
