Who are you planning on working with this summer?

Does anyone actually know what will happen in Simons? The website wasn’t very helpful. I just know there are “weekly brown-bag lunches” and a symposium at the end of the summer. Apparently this is the 2nd best research program in the country. Unfortunately, my PSATs weren’t high enough for RSI but I’ve had my mentor since like the beginning of October so I guess it’s not like I would have applied anyway.
I wish I knew more about this program.
By the way, do you think I’d have time to do some volunteering at the hospital? This is assuming my research allows it. Like, is the specifically Simons stuff a lot of time?

This is random, but did anyone else’s heart jump a little when you got the email from Ms. Kernan saying your app was received a few weeks ago? Idk for a second I thought maybe decisions had come SUPER early.

My RSI rejection came today… I really botched up that application though, I forgot to include my transcripts and PSAT stuff with it so I had to scan it and e-mail it to the director. I wasn’t expecting to get in anyway, though, and I like Simons better.

I never got an e-mail from Ms. Kernan, but I had to send her something also, and when I told her a couple of days ago that I had a mentor, she said “thanks for the update,” not, “who the hell are you and why are you e-mailing me,” so I’m assuming they got it. I hope so, at least.

If it makes you feel any better my research director didn’t even let me apply for RSI since my PSAT scores were too low :(.

Ehh… that seems like a silly reason not to let you apply, my friend and I both had PSAT scores above 220 and were rejected- I think Siemens might have made up for the low PSAT score… whatever, though. RSI admissions seem like a crapshoot anyway, I don’t feel bad at all about being rejected.

@Deliciouscake… somewhere on the website it says something about preferring 220+. If I’d had like a 219, maybe I would have asked for an app anyway but I was nowhere near that. PS. Siemens SF is apparently not a very big deal compared to other competitions A Siemens RF didn’t get into Barnard ED when I was going through other threads and it made me sad. This person also didn’t have the highest GPA, but high SAT scores. I’m hoping it was just her GPA that killed her.

I didnt get an email at first either. I was freaking out since the two other people from my school got emails. I emailed Karen about it and she said they misplaced it! Luckily they found it later lol.

Does anyone know when they start making decisions? Today my research director came and talked to someone else who happened to have applied to Simons… she hasn’t entered any competitions yet and when he left she had a REALLY big smile on her face. Do you think that’s what it was?

It would be sick if they already made decisions… it would be even more sick if they told us soon, I’m not enjoying waiting for these results. I think that I should e-mail Ms. Kernan, though, just to make sure she got my app.

Seems like everyone on this thread did Simons, did anyone on cc do garcia or know anything more about it? The website is kind of confusing.

bks85 I have a friend who did Garcia last year. She just made it to LISEF day 2 so I think it was a good program :)

rainbowrose, thanks for your answer. Sorry, I don’t live in the long island region, so I’m not sure what that is, but that sounds awesome!

It’s the regional ISEF competition. There are 2 days and the top 25% move on to the 2nd day.

I did Garcia. Its a great program, didnt get siemens or move forward to round 2 in LISEF, but me and two teams from Garcia are finalists in I-SWEEEP.

Do you work alone at Garcia or in groups on the projects, or does that depend? Thanks so much for the info!

NICE LiveLifeLoud! Gosh I REALLY hope I get into Simons. It’s such an amazing program! This is gonna sound stupid but it would also kind “complete the picture” for college ya know? To show that I’m REALLY dedicated to research. Although, it would be cool if I got rejected then became an Intel finalist LOL (not gonna happen either way :P).

bks85: It depends: since practically everyone does Siemens, the juniors work in pairs, and seniors work solo. Even a good portion of the seniors worked in pairs, but then divided their projects for intel. Its basically up to you.

Rainbowrose: Thanks! I was so happy when I found out. I honestly gave up on research and thought I would never get anything.

I hope I get in too! I want the $1000! ahah. If I don’t get in, it’s still okay and it won’t change anything since I’m still gonna go to Stony brook, but I want to get accepted! I think I contradicted myself, but whatever lol.

Nah @LiveLifeLoud I feel the same way considering I have a mentor either way lol. I think I would be more devastated not to get in if I actually knew if the program has such good yield at competitions because it’s a good program not because the mentors at SB are just so great. I can’t tell for sure considering I can barely find anything about the program on the website >.<

What questions do you have about it? I dormed last summer and all the summer research students lived in the same dorm. I know most of the simons students and they talked about the program so I might be able to help.
