SBU Programs (Simons & Garcia)

Is anyone applying to these programs at Stony Brook on CC? I applied to both and wondering if there's some people here that applied. If you did, where are you from and what do you hope to do if you get accepted?

—Bump—

Anyone?

I applied. Does anyone have any more information about this program? (I only did Garcia)

I actually did Garcia last summer and if I either get accepted or rejected from Simons, I’m still going to Garcia since I work with grad students from there.

The program is kind of unorganized at times, like in the beginning, but everyone gets a lab to work in and it all works all. And with no regards to doing actual research, the program is really fun. Since most students are in this one building, you’re always surrounded by others. Everyone bonds really well, and I would’ve hated it if the atmosphere was different.

Oh, nice!
I noticed you said “with no regards to doing actual research”…is the research good at the program? Also, you talked about the groups - do you get to work individually on your project?
regardless, that sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for the insight.

Oh no, the program itself is great. A lot of people were Siemens semi-finalists, Intel-finalists, and a good amount moved to round two in LISEF. When I said “with no regards to doing actual research,” I meant that the program was fun because of the people. I know some people who wanted to just do research, but others wanted to have fun and hang out, too. If you wanna have fun during your summer, and still do something productive, Garcia is a great place.

That sounds great. When were decisions mailed out last year?

Nope, they’re send it by email. Last year, they apologized for being organized since they sent the email to us close to the end of April only saying if we were accepted or not. Then two weeks later in the beginning of May, they sent the paperwork you had to fill out. People that went the previous year said it wasn’t like that last year so this year Garcia should be quicker with the emails hopefully.

Anyone gotten anything back yet?

Nope, I haven’t.

I applied for Simons this year.

^
Cool. What science lab did you apply to? Did you contact a professor?

I doubt anyone will get anything in a while. For Simons, it will be out April 1st I think. And for Garcia, if it is like last year, then it will come mid April.

For Garcia, is it necessary to contact a professor as well?

Nope, you’ll work with Grad and/or Undergrads. Most are pretty cool and a good portion did the program as high school students.

I’m planning on working with Dr. Aller in SoMAS

Nice. I heard that having a mentor already increases your chances significantly. I have mentor, but I was unable to get her to write a letter so I think I’m screwed lol.

I think if you told Ms. Kernan that you have a mentor already, you should be fine, but I’m not 100% sure on that.

I hope having a mentor increases my chances, my app kind of sucked.

We were supposed to tell her? I just put it on my app that I did lol.

My teacher says it does–but then again, she’s feeds her students a lot of b.s ahah. For the Simon Fellows last year, a lot of them had a mentor before the program and they believed it helped them. It would think it does since I would say the majority had mentors prior to the program.

My app wasn’t the greatest either. My recs were okay, but they didnt write a flaw I had. Hopefully I wont’t get penalized for that.

I applied to Simons :). Hoping that being a Siemens semifinalist will get me in but I have some TOUGH competition from my school alone.

I already have a mentor, though not the same one as last summer. I’m pretty sure sure two of my recs were amazing while 1 was so/so. My mentor last summer was my research director so he wrote that additional letterthing/rec so I’m hoping that was good. He also recommended my two partners from the other school in my district MEH. SO NERVOUS less than a month!

My essays were okay. I liked my “What question would you most like answered in science” one. Three of my friends enjoyed it while my guidance counselor said it was EH. However, I showed it to my friends after taking my guidance counselor’s advice.
