SC Honors College

Admissions tweeted today that Honors decisions should go out the end of this week

Just got my acceptance!

Congrats @Chopinspiano !

Congrats @Chopinspiano

@SALSRL @carolinamom2boys Thanks!

Congrats @Chopinspiano! How was the notification sent? Email or snail mail?

@TechITnow Mail! Though I did get a heads up from the dean earlier today because I had lunch with him.

@Chopinspiano are you In State?

@chemicmom Yes.

Does anyone know if getting into HC guarantees one of the scholarships? And on the flip side, if you do not make into HC as an OOS, do you still qualify for a scholarship?

Merit awards are separate from Honors College admission. Students who are not in the HC (may not have even applied) are awarded substantial merit based on stats. And HC admission does not mean any extra money beyond what your stats would indicate.

Ok, that is great to know because I honestly thought my stats (ACT 33/SAT 2260) and EC etc were good enough for HC (OOS). I have seen others with lower stats get into HC and I did not :frowning: Now only hoping for a decent merit aid besides the in-state tuition offer that I received with the acceptance back in November. Otherwise, I guess I have to wait for other schools’ decisions…not a good day today. This year’s application pool must have been really strong!

Look at the money matters information for all the OOS merit scholarships and the average stats that give you each one. However, they are averages and the talent pool does change the cutoffs each year. Are you NMF by any chance? That is an automatic scholarship than can be stacked with any other merit award.

Unfortunately, I am in a state that has ridiculously high cut-off for NMF. I missed it by 3 points. I do have other options for college. But SC HC was one of my top 3 so it cuts a bit deeper. Anyway, I have to wait to see what merit aid comes my way and if I decide to go to SC - I will try after my first year for HC again.

@Georgia52 my daughter definitely plans to rush! She is a McNair scholar so she has to live in the honors dorm, though she isn’t thrilled about it. She is really hoping to find someone else who wants to rush to room with. She also is considering GA’s honors program but it’s not nearly as good. (though she loves the campus!!!) We are from Florida so her real struggle is between USC and UF. She really loves the honors program there though. We just had our scholars weekend this past weekend and I cannot tell you how impressed we were. There was just no comparison with any other honors program we have seen across the board, and we have toured MANY campuses lol. To be honest, right now one of her primary concerns about USC is that because she is a business major whose focus is NOT international business, we are a little concerned that she may feel like her major isn’t prioritized enough in the business school with enough classes or electives. We need to do some more research on that issue.

^^Curious @fbhsmom as to why she’s not thrilled about honors dorm. If it’s because she thinks no one will rush, that’s wrong. D had two roommates freshman year rush and pledge and then two apartment mates sophomore year (both got bids). I know there are honors students who are business but not IB. If you look at HC advisors, there are advisors depending on major. Maybe the one who advises business honors could answer your questions. Congrats on McNair - being a top scholars gives you some great additional support and social opportunities.

Thanks @scmom12 :slight_smile: maybe I’ll try and talk to a HC advisor, Good idea!

This is not meant to be a flip comment…but anyone studying business should have an understanding of how the world functions outside a home market. Your DD will study some international business whether she wants to or not. She sounds like she is a people person. Does she want sales and marketing? Smart sales people are always in high demand. Congrats on being selected McNair.

@GCBMIB yes! She is a people person interested in Marketing and Psychology double major. She is just concerned that with all the focus on IB the depth of the marketing offerings may be lacking. She wants to take an international marketing class of course, lol you figured her out exactly! But she just doesn’t want to feel like marketing is not really a focus in the school. The IB programs and the cohorts sounded incredible if that is what you are interested in, they are just not her thing. Thanks on the congratulations. She certainly has some tough choices ahead. She is really enjoying bonding with the other McNair kids on their group chat!

The IB program requires a double major in another business school program as well, so she shouldn’t be concerned about marketing being put in the back seat since quite a few of her classmates in business courses will be IB AND Marketing majors. Also, the number of actual IB classes/requirements is quite small to make way for that double major and the language minor, and the actual IB class is pretty small and selective (if I remember correctly). I wouldnt worry about it being overshadowed by IB.
