SC Honors College

@chemicmom Are you OOS or in-state?

OOS. Michigan

OOS michigan

I am guessing you will get the Alumni or the Cooper or one of those listed scholarship…just a guess.

@chemicmom My son did not apply to USC, but did apply to 2 other SC colleges and both times he was invited to interview weekends it arrived any Fed Ex or UPS.

@chemicmom Four years ago my son received his honors notification via regular mail in December. He also received his scholarship notification via regular mail in March. I’m sure things change every year. Still waiting on honors notification for my daughter. Did rec info about merit scholarship (at least 75K) in acceptance letter and also in the invite letter to Scholar Socials.

My daughter received the letter from USC with acceptance and an offer of in state tuition in December with a bit more. She has not heard yet from the Honors College. Does this letter mean that she is likely to get into the Honors College or not? She has a 30 ACT with 31 superscore and a 4.3 GPA.

Also does anyone know how USCs honors program compares to UGAs? Thanks!

^^ First USC sends out honors acceptances through mid February so you should know about honors in the next few weeks. Second USC is top rated public honors college. Don’t know specifically what aspects of program you want to compare with UGA. My D had wonderful experience at USC honors. Small classes, great professors, great group of kids and with honors housing lived on campus all 4 years - 3 in historic horseshoe apartments

Oh thanks for that information! Do the honors kids typically participate in Greek life or is the program too demanding?

Several of D’s roommates were in sororities. Two girls joined in sophomore year. Most of honors students my D was friends with very involved in campus activities including Greek life, student government, service, etc. Many also did research. This included kids that were double majors, engineering, business and premed. In fact HC encourages freshmen to get involved in something outside of academics.

Thanks so much for the information! She will just wait for the February letter. Will she get an answer about the honors college either way? Or do they just send out acceptances?

@scmom12 how COOL to be in the historic apartments on the horseshoe, i would want to live there! @Georgia52 what is a SUPERSCORE? My kid got a 33 on his ACT but i have never heard of a superscore.

I presume they inform all HC applicants, one way or the other.

My D is a current first year in the Honors College. I can’t compare it to UGA, but can give you some general info. The Honors classes are small, but I was pleasantly surprised at how small her “regular” classes are, as well (e.g. Intro Spanish–NOT Honors–capped at 25 students). Intro Accounting was around 40 students–but it was an 8 AM class so maybe that’s why it was small? This semester she has the Honors version of Accounting, which I think is 25 students. The Honors seminar-type classes of 15 students require consistent prep as there’s nowhere to hide in a class that small–but she enjoyed them. She had 3 Honors courses first semester and 2 this semester.

The Honors Dorm is nice. She spends a lot of time in the common rooms/lounges, doing HW, watching Netflix with friends, just hanging out. She also spends a lot of time over at Capstone which she deems a much more “fun” dorm. Several of her friends are in sororities. The workload seems fine; she claims to spend multi-hour chunks of time in the library, but it’s generally with a group of friends and eventually involves coffee, frozen yogurt, “second dinner,” etc. Plenty of time on the weekends for athletic events (football, of course, but also soccer and basketball games), dinner off campus (many restaurants, coffee shops, etc. within walking distance), etc. Her roommate goes home every other weekend, but it sounds like there are always plenty of students around.

Next year she will live at 650 Lincoln, which is a new on-campus apartment complex. None of her friends are staying in the Honors Dorm. They all wanted housing on the Horseshoe, but she doesn’t know anyone who actually got it as they were all assigned to 650 Lincoln (my understanding is that there will be an Honors LLC there, along with athletes, business students, etc.)

Just to point out, USC redid Rutledge (where my D lived) and Pinckney Legare dorms on horseshoe this year, each was “off-line” for part of year and the moved students from one to the other. That meant that this year there were fewer spots on the Horsehoe for students and they designated part of 650 Lincoln for honors. There will more spaces again next year but I’m not surprised if there leaving a block of apartments for honors at Lincoln since honors college has grown.

It was interesting at the senior revocation that many students spoke about their group of good friends - mostly based on their hall in the honors dorm their freshman year. It was also true of my D. Her second floor peeps stayed her main friend group even after they moved out of Honors Residence.

Anyone get good news in the mail today?

@chemicmom Not from honors. Only a letter about their new Geoscience Scholars Program.

We won’t get mail for a couple hours. Today is the deadline for yes or no right? Should we find out either way? We got a random email saying WELCOME to the U of SC but no mention of Honors.

Last year HC 2nd wave decisions were mailed the day after Presidents day so my guess is that we will hear by the end of the week. Some peeps didn’t get their letter until the 22nd or 23rd and postmarked the 19th. Oh well. We wait…
