SC Merit Scholarships

S from Virginia received McKissick and invite to Capstone. Scholarship info came on Saturday and Capstone letter came yesterday

Does anyone know if you get a “no” letter about Capstone so you know definitively? D (we are OOS) got the Sims scholarship. Not sure if her stats will get her a Capstone invitation, but we’re still hopeful. Should we be? Do Sims recipients get invited to Capstone?

I don’t think you get a definite “no” answer regarding Capstone. I called Admissions this week and they said the last Capstone invitations went out late Friday afternoon. So, I am figuring that if the letter isn’t there today, my daughter didn’t get in. It’s a disappointment but her scholarship was very generous (Woodrow) and I know she’ll find her niche there in another way!

My son’s ACT was 29 & SAT was a 1330 (not superscored, only took each once at the beginning of his Junior year)

A 3.85 at one school could easily be equal to a 3.50 at another school so the actual high school carries weight.

Our son’s numbers weren’t that far off from yours and we got the Sims offer.

We got the same letter.

I guess I don’t understand your statement. Capstone does look like a good program but it’s not really an honor’s component. It doesn’t offer any additional financial merit. It is a nice alternative to the larger, normal groups but this is a bit like saying that you will only send you kid to a school that will allow him to join a specific fraternity. $'s are not the only consideration. Our son is in pursuit of International Business & USC is #1 in the country. If your son is looking at the IB program, you may want to consider the level of the schools before making the decision

First time here. We’re in Calif and my son is anxious because he hasn’t gotten a scholarship letter yet. He got his admittance letter a week ago Tues. He’s hoping for a Sims award as he has a weighted 3.6 and ACT of 27, which should be in the average for last year unless that 28 ACT is a minimum. LSU has a minimum ACT of 28 for its lowest award, so he missed out on that. He got a lot more money than Sims at University of AZ, so I’m wondering if it’s a geographic consideration - Arizona wants Calif students. Anyway, we’re anxiously watching the mail so we can make plans to attend the Admitted Students Day on Apr. 5!

Look on Self Service Carolina. If there’s a scholarship offer you’ll see it there. Good luck.

Thanks!

Clicking on Financial Aid -> Award -> Award for Aid Year, it states: " No award information is available for you at this time, please contact your financial aid office if you have questions." He sent an email to the financial aid office because it also looks like his SAT scores are reflected on his application on My SC, but not his ACT scores, which were higher.

@ndabunka my son received cooper and capstone in separate envelopes. The capstone invite came a few days after the cooper.

@neonpinklime - Did your son apply to the honors college? I think I saw your s’s stats on another thread (Penn State maybe b/c my d was accepted there too), but I bet he could’ve gotten in if not.

@coleman4 Yes my S was admitted to Penn State. He did not get the Honors College. Briefly his stats were: ACT 34, valedictorian (1/148), lots of extracuriculars in athletics, music and community volunteer work. He’s been admitted so far to: University of Virginia early action OOS applicant (large scholarship but don’t want to say how much and jinx it), Penn State, NC State, U of Kentucky (10k per year merit aid), Clemson (15k per year merit aid), Virginia Tech, USC (cooper scholarship). Waiting to hear from: Vanderbilt regular decision, U of Penn regular decision. He’s still waiting for financial aid decisions from Penn State, NC State. He hasn’t made a decision yet because he wants to see what all his options will be before he decides. Has your D gotten a financial aid offer yet from Penn State? I’ve heard they don’t give much aid.

FYI My son was on the admitted students Facebook page and a girl posted that she called the financial aid office today and was told that scholarship letters are still being sent out. So if your son/daughter is still waiting, there’s some hope!

I was also eagerly awaiting merit scholarship awards as this will certainly partake in my final decision. I received the Flinn scholarship and my stats are about a 4.35 waited from a competitive Midwest high school with a 30 on the ACT. This decision is going to be pretty tough as I originally applied due to interest in the International Business program and the fact that I always some how cheered for USC watching football on Saturdays. I would greatly appreciate any additional opinions or personal opinions on the school, program, and city itself.

@coleman4 I just realized that you were probably meaning the honors college at USC. Duh really on my part. My S applied two weeks late and because of that his online application told us he qualified for honors college but then blacked out that section. So he was not permitted to fill it out.

@neonpinklime - Sounds like our kids applied to a few of the same schools (Clemson-10k, NC State, UPenn- RD, Penn State, USC- Cooper). She hasn’t heard on Penn State scholarship either and I heard the same- they seem tight on those and doesn’t seem merit based either. She didn’t apply to their honors college because she was tired of writing essays after all those for USC’s honors college. But for the record, I’m surprised your son didn’t get into Schreyer’s with his stats. My daughter has 4.5 GPA and 34 ACT as well, and ECs. She also has UF-Honors invite, UMD-College Park Scholars, and UNC-Chapel Hill. I know that sounds like a lot of schools to apply to but she had various reasons for each one (family alumni, best friend going- UF, location/area, good engineering program, etc.).

She’s leaning heavily towards USC because the Honors College is known to be a great program (#1), her brother goes there now and she really likes the campus- feels “comfortable” there as she says it. The number of food places doesn’t hurt either- ~ 28 spots, which definitely swayed my son. LOL …

We’ve toured all the schools she’s applied to except UF- touring that over spring break, and what we’ve learned between her and her brother’s experience is that a ranking or prestige of a school should not be the only deciding factor but also where you feel comfortable or a good fit for you personally. A good example is UNC-Chapel Hill- a very prestigious school, and she got accepted but not in the honors program and she’s not interested in any of their living-learning communities, and their engineering program- well they don’t have one except the focus she’s interested in, so even though my husband is an alumni and ‘strongly encouraging’ her to choose UNC, that is not a good fit for her.

Anyway, she is fortunate to have some good opportunities before her so like your son, she wants to wait to hear back from everything- UPenn next week and any scholarships from others, before deciding but in the end, I still suspect she’ll choose USC - but either way, even if she gets in UPenn, it has to be her decision (not my husbands or mine or her brother or her best friend’s, etc.)

Ibcs270, what is the amount that the Flinn scholarship gives? Apparently it’s a new scholarship according to the counselors. I recently visited and they told me it would be added next year.

Edit: Oops! Looks like they added it to the website.

@coleman4 they did apply to a lot of the same schools! My S wants to be a chemical engineer so the schools he applied to had to have a good engineering school including that degree. For that reason, UNC Chapel Hill was out. Though he liked the campus and it would’ve been an in-state option for him. He instead applied to NC State which has an outstanding engineering school, but a large one. We’re still waiting on the financial aid offer there but he’s competing for the Goodnight Scholarship (we were supposed to hear today, but they emailed to say they need another week to make decisions). If he gets it that would cover the cost of in-state tuition and fees, leaving only room and board, etc for him to pay. My S’s grandfather went to U of Penn, so he has a legacy hook there. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets in. I’ve heard that legacy only helps if you apply early decision. And then there’s vanderbilt which we visited last weekend and what an amazing campus. We should hear from them a few days before UPenn. Like you said, it’s going to be his decision and not ours but I think it’s going to come down to a combination of aid and fit to the campus. I’m just happy he’s got options.

My D was awarded the Sims about a week ago. Works out to be about $8,600/yr. Based on her stats, this was what she was expecting. It brings down her OOS tuition to about $19,500/yr.
