SC students, can your answer these questions please

Hi,

So I am planning on going to SC, but I really have some questions!

I mean, I never really thought of this before, and I hope you SC students can answer these questions honestly( i don't care if you put your own bias in there, that makes the better) I want your opinions on these questions too!

1) How is the diversity(as a SC student already attending there) when your in class? When you walk around do you see a crowds of basically one race hanging with each other, or is everyone intergrated?

For example: Your in class and there are 30 white students 10 Asians 5 hispanics and 3 black students in the class

or when you walk about the campus you see only whites hanging with whites asians hanging with asians and so on and so forth

2.) Is there a strong minority force at the school? Do you know much about the minority activities or hear about it atleast once or twice a month, less than a month, or not at all?

3.) What about the Frats and Soros? Do the students only know about the majority white frats and soros? Do the other soros and frats like the asian pacific, spanish, or Black councils have a presence at all?

I really would appreciate your answers to these questions. They don't have to be thorough, but atleast a little informative so I can know about the school a little bit.

Also, if you don't mind can you provide your ethnicity, its optional if you want to.

Thanks!

My S will be part of a minority group at USC, i.e. white caucasian students. He will be part of the 46% who identified themselves as white caucasians. Is he concerned about it? I don’t think so. He went to a private school that wasn’t hugely diverse ethnically, but they all hung together there, Whites, Asians, Blacks. He was part of a white majority in his school but will see fewer white cuacasians at USC. I think, you are going to find some of both. It all depends on students’ backgrounds. Some will be more open than others. Sorry, I am not answering your questions, it’s just my thinking as to how things going to play out for my S IF he decides to go to USC. But think about this: USC is one of the most diverse univesities in the US. So there are at least some things they’ve done right about making minorities feel good about attending this university.

There is plenty of interaction between the different races. All the classes I’ve been to are sufficiently diverse.

I wouldn’t say there’s a STRONG minority force…but if I’m sure if you look for it, it’s there. There are so many activities/events promoted in classes, in my sorority, on trousdale, etc. that I honestly stopped paying close attention. Most of these promotions though are from non-racial groups like Student Government, religious, groups, volunteer groups, etc.

The traditionally white greek organizations dominate the greek scene, without a doubt. But I have plenty of friends in professional frats/asian frats that love it. Honestly haven’t heard much about any other minority frats (although i KNOW there are African American ones). But I’m sure they love their orgs and honestly probably don’t want to be associated with the white frats/are okay with staying low key. I never see them TRYING to make a presence, so it’s not about people ignoring them.

Bottom line: USC is very diverse, which is why I love it. I grew up with a very diverse group of friends, so I don’t even see people’s skin color anymore. I’m friends with people who I genuinely like, and that’s how most people’s attitudes are here. The only time I’ve seen groups of only one race, it’s because they limit themselves to that. Maybe it’s their comfort zone because it’s how they were brought up, but please don’t do that because every individual here has so much to offer  (not to say you shouldn’t join minority organizations, just branch out as well!)

Oh and I’m a mix of a bunch of different things (Mexican, Spanish, Native American, little Asian), but I look hispanic lol.
