Hello. I am an international student interested in attending USC as an undergraduate next year and am applying for the interactive media major. I have two questions regarding the SCA online application ( USC Cinema - Admissions » Applications » Apply Online )

1 - It doesn't allow me to select a major in the "Please Select your Desired Degree and Major(s)" field, it only says "N/A" below each program. Does anyone know how to select a major?

2 - The field "State" is mandatory. The problem is that in my country there are no states, so I would have to leave that blank. Any way around this?

And the SCA requires me to send a copy of the USC Application for Admission - Does the copy include high school transcripts?

Lol, I had this problem, but all you have to do is select what your "incoming status" is. Are you going to be a freshman or transfer? Selecting one makes it so that you know which majors/minors would be availible to you.

I guess you could just put N/A because the "country" field is optional and would only be used by an international student.

Yes, they require transcripts from every school you've attended, high school and college.

Thanks a lot for the answer TrojanTransfer.

So basically, what I have to send is a photocopy of all my forms (since I'm applying with the paper forms) plus transcripts. Do these photocopies need to be official or something? And do I need to send the financial statement as well?

You don't need to send the your transcripts or any financial statement info (mercy!) to SCA! They simply want a copy of your main USC application. If I recall, they don't even require copies of your USC essays, although it couldn't hurt to copy them if you wish.

In general, they will see your self-reported grades (from the USC app), test scores, along with other basic info. In order to save time, USC adcoms are in charge of the official docs and if there is any discrepancy between what is reported and the official SATs, GPAs etc, USC adcoms keep track of that.

Assuming you have the grades/score to do well academically at USC, the SCA will primarily look at your supplemental material, which includes extra letters of rec and the essays SCA requires. When they put together their list of admits, they then consult with the main USC adcoms about each student. If there has been a mistake in reported grades/scores, etc, that's when the conversation occurs. It is possible to be acceptable to SCA but not be acceptable to USC--or so I've heard.

The strongest candidates will be impressive in their supplement as well as their high school records, ECs, and test scores. If your SCA major really loves your supplement, you may have a little leeway in your academic grades--just like some favored athletes are given a bump. But they will not admit a student who can't handle the level of work required to receive a B.A. degree at USC--because you will be taking many general ed, language, and other courses.

Lol, sorry, you send all your transcripts to the USC Office of Admissions, not SCA.

Most of the programs say this:

Photocopy or Printout of the USC Application for Admission (undergraduates only)

Send a photocopy or printout of the application you have submitted to the USC Office of Admission. Do not send the original application to the School of Cinematic Arts. It is not necessary to send the university essay, quick takes, or short answers to the School of Cinematic Arts. Transfer applicants should send the activity summary. Online applicants should print a copy of the application from their computer. A brief statement indicating submission of the online application is acceptable if you are unable to print the materials.

I'm fairly certain it's a "received by" deadline for SCA - I can't remember if my son called about that, or just acted cautiously, but he didn't want to miss the deadline!

Some majors in SCA require a one-page writing sample describing a character. They do not specify single or double spaced, so you cannot be wrong no matter which way you choose to go. They also ask for a creative statement of up to 1000 words. That's pretty long (approx 4 pages double-spaced), and may be one of the most important parts of your application. The department really gives a lot of weight to your creative statement because it gives you a chance to really express your passion for film and your personal vision! My advice is not to make this generic, but really show what moves you and what you hope to do in the future. And some SCA majors also ask for a two-page double-spaced second writing sample.

Best advice is to follow the instructions as completely as you can and not to worry too much about the conflicting or incomplete instructions. You may call the department admissions person, of course, and if you get clearing advice please post it.

Thanks, I will email them and ask if it is acceptable to submit two double spaced pages instead of one single spaced.

Since my school doesn't follow the US educational system, I am required to not fill anything in form 3 - which is where I would state my grades. Do you think it is ok to submit my grades on a separate sheet?

Also, I do not have the November SAT score report, not even online - Is it print the "My SAT scores" page and send that as the unofficial report? Thanks everyone.

@USC_Applicant: Yes, it is okay to submit your grades on a separate sheet. But keep in mind that it has to be a certified translation. I applied last year, and I sent a copy of my original grade report as well as a certified translation.

My problem is that I only have one certified translation of my transcript, and that has to be sent to the office of admission.

But what about the people who apply online? If they can't print out their application, they just need to write a note indicating that they applied online - In that case, they don't show any transcripts or grades or anything.

What's confusing to me is what SCA means by "photocopy of application". Does that include only the forms? Because if I can't self-report my grades in Form 3, I'd have to self-report them on a separate sheet right?

And is there any application fee for SCA?

By the way, did you get in Awelex? If so, how is it all?

@USC_Applicant: Why don't you copy the certified translation a couple of times and have the copies signed by your school? And yes, I'd send those grades to SCA, after all, they need to see them.
Yes, I got in, but in spring. So I can't tell you until January ;)

Hm I don't know if I have the time for that, have to send it all over pretty soon. Maybe I'll email them. Do you know if they are fast to respond to inquiries?

@USC_Applicant: In my case, they certainly were not. They didn't answer at all :D
Regarding the grades: just send an unsigned copy to SCA, but make sure that USC admission gets the certified copy.

Hey, where are you international students from? It's exciting that you want to study at USC. It adds a nice diversity at the campus. My daughter is a first year SCA student and she loves it! The program is even better so far than she had imagined.
