Any thoughts on the quality of SCAD’s BFA film program? Is it on par/competitive with other high ranked BFA film programs? My daughter is choosing between SCAD and UNC School of the Arts film programs. Any input is appreciated. We liked the SCAD campus very much and we love Savannah. But UNCSA has an amazing film program, very recognized program. How is SCAD’s film program, what is it’s reputation? Thanks so much.

Hi! I live in Georgia and have attended SCADs summer seminars in Atlanta and Savannah and the Rising Star program last summer. I like SCAD.
If you are looking for the better school, it’s UNCSA hands down IMHO. As far as I know, SCAD’s film program isn’t recognized. UNCSA is like #6 in the USA and has a lot of successful alumni in the industry. I can’t name one from SCAD. But, UNCSA will be much more work than SCAD because it’s a conservatory. That means less free time, and for a lot of people that can be a turn off. Some people want a more traditional college experience. Nothing wrong with that.
Savannah is definitely a better city. Beautiful, with lots more to do and beaches just 20 min. away.
SCAD is also significantly more expensive - by what, at least $15k?!
If I had the choice, it would be UNCSA!
Good luck!
I have a good friend whose son is a sophomore in SCAD’s film program. He loves it, raves about it in fact. And he came from Boston! He has already gotten to work on a documentary about ALS that was published in conjunction with the Ice Bucket Challenge thing last year. I know nothing about UNCSA.
One more comment…
My parents know a few other parents whose kids graduated from SCAD film school and of the three, two of them ever actually got a job in film but had $100k in debt. Check the employment rate for film graduates. One of the other peeps my parents know of started his own film company and does corporate training videos and stuff like that. Does well with it, but it’s not glamourous!
The lack of solid employment rates post graduation along with the high tuition/fees/room/board is one of the number one reasons I never even applied to SCAD. (That and they didn’t really have the exact program I was looking for.)
Thank you LARPgirl and honestmom. I appreciate the input and your experiences.
