Scam?!?

Okay, so I got a letter from the mail today from Fordham.

It basically says "We really want you to submit an application with Your Choice Application."

and they waived my app fee and gave me a special login name and password for Fordham

Is this a scam?

I never thought about Fodham until now. Is it worth applying through this "special system" or should I just do it the old fashion "common app" way?

Any advise will be appreciated.

I think it’s just a way to get more people to apply. Not a scam but I don’t know that it actually improves your chances at all. It’s still free application fee though, so I’d use it.

Not a scam.

I used it. It was fast and easy. Way easier than Common App.

Not a scam. But not a guarantee of admission either. You still have to cut the mustard for admission stats.

I decided to use this app, but I didnt plan on applying to Fordham, so on the 3rd when I get back to school I’ll have to give my GC the forms for transcripts and her letter of recommendation. Do I need a teacher’s letter?

When I applied Early Action, I did not need a teacher rec. But it couldn’t hurt.

not a scam, but you could also use the fee waiver if you decide you want to just add it on common app. Theres no supplement which is nice. It is not at all a guarantee for admission, however. By making the app free, Fordham encourages more people to apply and they get to reject more people, which makes them look more selective.

Fordham encourages more people to apply and they get to reject more people, which makes them look more selective. =namesake.

Oh for goodness sakes. That is total bs. Good grief.

I hate it when these comments surface from people. Its so wrong and out of place.

There are MANY reasons that Fordham admissions has seen a rise in applications from 15,000 a year to 28,000 last year, over a 7 year span. But “marketing free applications” isnt one of them.

Fordham IS more selective than it was 7 years ago. So are many colleges, by the way. There was a bubble in demographics the last 5-6 years…a huge demographic bubble which saw its peak last year. It will slowly wane and then is actually expected to drop off significantly in 5 years or so. baby booms etc. Its anyone’s guess what the admission standards will be at colleges in 5 years with fewer high school seniors graduating nationwide and college tuition expected to continue to rise to levels that middle income families will be iced out.

There is a lot of discussion around the country in admissions circles about making scholarships need based, to avoid the elitist charges as fees/tuition increase to unaffordable levels. I have no clue if that will take hold or not.

The Ivy League and some selective schools like Davidson are now promising no student loans to incoming freshmen families, and at the Ivy league there is no scholarship money and its all need based aid. (Because they believe everyone is scholarship level.)

of course there are a zillion reasons that fordham has become more selective over the years. I was just offering a possible reason why fordham has been so enthusiastically handing out free applications (and there are probably a hundred OTHER reasons why). I do not assert my statement as a solid fact, but a slight posibility is all. Just on CC alone there have been numerous threads dedicated to the free “your choice application.”

Not a scam. My daughter received this as well. She used the common app since she was applying to several schools and Fordham waived the fee (the letter/email gives you instructions on how to do this via common app). Teacher recommendation is not required but my daughter sent one teacher recommendation anyway. My daughter was accepted early action.
