How long are your "Why Yale's"

since they only have like 20 min. on the appl., they prefer you not to attach a resume... since its redundant and just takes up time... focus on your essays instead...

Yale's online supplement said to keep your "How did you first become interested in applying to Yale" to less than 50 words. Mine's 51. I hope they'll forgive me. I'm pretty sure they don't use your answer in the evaluation of your app, it's more for marketing purposes (I forget where I read that, but I read it somewhere).
I know this question has been asked before, but does anyone know if Yale wants first quarter grades? If they do, or even if their optional (I would like to send mine), how do we send them? There's no "first quarter grade report" form is there?

What are you guys writing for "why Yale"?

the marching band page was so inspiring that, of all the schools i was looking at.. (top schools) it had a spirit and flare to it that made me go "I wanna hang out with them and be like them and go to Yale"
except i will be a bit more articulate. lol

I asked my rep and she told me that while Yale doesn't require them, you're welcome to send if you want.

Thanks for the help jb13. Do you know how we should send the reports? Is there a special form, or should I just ask my guidance counselor to send my 1st quarter grades, and she'll know what to do?

I think your GC should just send them with your transcript and school report, etc. I'm assuming your GC will know what to do

umm....since when is there a "why yale?" question? Where is it on the application? For some reason, I've never seen it on the paper app....

Hi, I haven't posted here before. I'm Malaysian, completing high school in Singapore this December. I'm applying to Yale EA. I just saw a notice on their website saying that we can send in our application without the Yale supplement essay - just enter "Essay being sent seperately". I wonder if this applies to the Common App essay too, which I'm still heavily revising? And is there any advantage in sending in the esay-less application earlier, as opposed to sending the completed application at one go by November 1?

I'm really worried, everyone seems to be sending in their applications already while I'm still struggling with my essays! (I actually completed them a month ago, but last week I suddenly realized I wasn't happy with them and wanted to completely rewrite them.)

Donna, the "Why Yale" is on the first page of the Yale supplement ("How did you become interested in applying to Yale" or something like that).

I turned my application in about two weeks ago. How long do you guys think it wil be before an alumni should contact me about an interview?

I would imagine it has to be soon. It's only two months until the final decision is made!

thanks wmgan--

for some reason i thought that was just supposed to be a one-word answer....now that I think about it, that doesn't make much sense.

r we supposed to fill out CSS 2004-2005 or 2005-2006?

2005-2006. the other is for transfer students

thanks-- when do we have to submit that by? I'm guessing not by nov 1 bc we don't have our 2004 tax returns yet.

On the common app, it asks u "will u be a candidate for financial aid?" and then, "if yes, the appropriate forms was/will be filed on _____" what are we supposed to put in that blank?

I just filled in the month I am going to do it. I have not filled out financial aid forms yet, but I did send the application in. I just put 10/2004, assuming that I would fill it out this month.

If we answer "topic of your choice", should we title it? It looks so plain w/o a title. I'm having a hard time titling mine, though. How did you guys approach the short answer question without sounding like your essay?

Chidimma, I didn't title my "topic of your choice" essay. I can't think of anything clever. Besides, the supplemental essay doesn't have a title (or at least mine doesn't).

As for the short answer, I am planning to write mine about a different topic, so not sounding like my essay won't be a problem. However, if you're writing about the same topic, I think it would be okay to just take a few strong lines from your essay and summarize it.

I completely cannot believe how fast time has gone by. My school needs 2 weeks to process the app, so I need to turn mine in after the weekend. UGhhhh! Now I've got to go write my personal statement for the fortieth time...
