Yea, 650 would be too many. When I heard the admissions spiel from the guy in my area, I think he actually used 650 as the figure for an unnecessarily long (and probably pretty irritating) essay. If you could cut it to the 520-530 area, that would be good enough (also his words).

I think as long as the essay doesn't drag on or feel like it is extrememly long the word count isn't that important. An essay that is 400 words can seem to last forever while an essay that is 600 words can read quickly. I think the admissions officers just don't want to be bored out of their minds. Just my opinion.

on css profile: i talked to an adcom and since were applying EA, he said to use 2003 tax returns... but for normal admission, use the 2004...

on attaching activity sheet or the long essay... i think its just that they have time constraints... like 20 min per app... they dont like reading unneccessary stuff... who would after reading 1000000000 apps. (well not that many...)

I have a kind of weird question for you guys:
Does anyone know what the acceptance envelopes look like? Does Yale send legal sized envelopes, thick envelopes with lots of stuff, normal envelopes with lots of stuff? I just got to thinking about that today.

Someone on another board said Yale sent similar-sized envelopes, but I don't know. Princeton's are different sizes.

Acceptance envelopes are big and wonderful. Thick envelopes.

Anyway, you probably will check your decision online.

is anyone else having trouble on 150-word significant activity?.... i cant cut it down!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wrote the 500 word essays in about 2 hours total. no problem. ive spent two weeks on this 150 word thing and i cant cut it down. the short ones sound so icky

I cant get it either. my activity essay isn't coing out too well, either. sigh. two weeks, guys!

two weeks nothing! Try a day! my school needs 10 days to send it all out, and we dont have school tomorrow, so i have to hand it all in on tuesday! ahhH! id loooovvvvve to have more time!

chidimma, tell me what you think about mine. I sent it to the address you emailed to me. I can also give you comments on what you have so far.

I wonder if they'll even read the 150-word 'short answer'? After all, the 500-word Yale Supp essay's supposed to be an 'expansion' of this short answer, which I assume means it should cover everything we wrote in the short answer and then some.

Hey NewT, I remember talking to you online from June.... what was your sn again?

Somewhere it said that the activity short answer could be 250 words. Mine is 245. Where does it say it has to be 150? I'd screwed if thats the case...

Well, the FAQ says that the question can be answered in one or two finely crafted sentences...

CAN BE....I can be answered the question in like 10 nice long sentences :)

My attached activities/honors/volunteering/summer experiences/hobbies resume is 3 and a half pages long! Is this overkill? I just listed everything that I do/ have done in a few spread sheets. Now that I'm reading all of these posts I'm beginning to think my application is too large..?

I just got notice today that Yale has received my application. I'm so excited/nervous!! Good luck to everybody working on your essays and applications!

How'd the notification come flachica?

so i finally managed to write my Short Answer. Is there anyone out there kind enough to read it and tell me honestly whether it is any good? Its a tad unusual, I am just wondering if it will make the reader go.. hm, sigh, next or not. Id be more than glad to do an exchange with someone and read theirs for comments as well. thanks all.

and good luck to Flachica412!! congrats on being ahead of the game
