Just got a brochure in the mail about Summer 2006 SCend Offs, where you are invited to meet alumni in your area. Anyone with info about these? How are they? Most importantly (from son's perspective), are they more than just PR & is there food & beverages?
Would love any feedback from anyone. Thanks!

I am going to one on August 6th here in the bay.

They are usually hosted at a private home, and I believe there is food and such. I really think it depends on what the alumni in your area have set up.

I know that last year, a friend of mine went to a scend of, and they actually had some of the marching band play for them. pretty neat if you ask me.

We'll be in LA & San Diego for two weeks in early August. Wonder if it would be worthwhile to try to attend one while we're traveling, in addition to the HI one we will attend.

Well, The closest ones for me are either Denver or Seattle, so I think I'll just skip it.

Though I actually did meet some current students the other day, which was a first

guidez89, are you going to the one in Los Altos Hills? I'll be going to that one.

I think the marching band players were alums?

i think thats the one im going too. yes, i believe they were alums, but they wore outfits and all apparently. lol

Ooh I'm thinking about going to the LAH one too :) I think it's only a couple minutes from my house.

What exactly happens at a SCend Off? I'm actually kinda interested, because I don't know many people from my area going to SC, so maybe I could meet up with them.

I also hear that they have scholarship funds. :p

Anyone planning on going to the San Marino one?

The SCendoffs mostly seem like an opportunity for '10ers to meet people in the same class from their area. Alumni also come to talk to people about USC and share their stories. The regional alumni clubs have scholarships available, but I don't know if they publicize their availability during the SCendoff.

^ Is there RSVP info up for the LAH one?

Its not in LAH anymore. I was at the gym yesterday., and an alumn was talking to me about it. Apparently the neighbors compained, so they had to change the location. I believe its at a park in redwood city now. Ill try to find out.

would it be worth it to go to a SCendoff if its about 45 minutes away (the Santa Barbara one)? or just in general is it worth it to go to SCendoffs? i'm interested and i'm considering going, but i'm just not sure if its worth the time and drive.

I have the same problem...my closest SCendoff is Newport Beach/Irvine, which is also ~45 minutes away. Close enough that I'll suck it up and drive there, but too far if the event is, well, uneventful.

45 minutes? that's nothing. Just drive there.

I guess you never know unless you go--otherwise you'll always have "woulda, coulda shoulda." A 45 minute drive is pretty reasonable--better than a plane trip. We are planning to go as a family--son who will be entering USC this August, daughter who will be a HS junior in the fall & hubby & I. Ours is $10 apiece!

yeah, exactly...it's not that far, but far enough that if it wasn't anything i'd feel as though i'd wasted time. thankfully at mine, it's not wasted money...entering students and family are free. hopefully someone who's been to one can give us some insight.

Well, just got back from the HI USCend Off at a hotel bar & grill. It was OK. They gave out lots of t-shirts from 2005 USC v. HI football game, had soft drinks & pupus. Incoming freshmen were free & everyone else paid $10 apiece to help offset costs. It was OK & the incoming freshmen chatted a bit, as did parents.
