I'm still in High School and applied early in the year.

At that time, I had expected to be taking AP Computer Science second semester as an online course, but because the entire state of Kentucky couldn't get a measly 5 students interested in the class, it was canceled, and instead I'm taking Game Design.

Do I need to report this schedule change to USC, and how should I go about doing it? Also, will it hurt my chances? They should also be receiving my 7th Semester grades, which are all A's, including a 100 in BC Calculus, and I'm applying to Viterbi.

Also, as a side question, how deeply does USC look into subscores? I'm applying for engineering with a 28 ACT, but with a 35 in math (26 everywhere else). So will that subscore help me? I know at UMich I got admitted pretty easily, and that was one of the reasons for sure. Also, i sent my December test to USC, which should be higher, hoping at least a 30, and as high as a 33. However, my math might be a 33 or 34, but could still be 35-36 because it seems after a 33 it seems that my score just depends how many ignorant mistakes I make. If I score a 32, for example, but have a 33 on math, will it still help my chances of getting into Viterbi?

USC claims to look at the entire app “wholistically,” so I wouldn’t stress. They didn’t even have game design at our kids’ HS! I wouldn’t stress over not being able to take a course that was cancelled due to reasons beyond your control.

You can contact the USC counselor for your area (go to the usc.edu page to find him/her) & send an e-mail explaining the scheduling issue and it should be fine, really!

The school of engineering is pretty competitive, but I believe some folks are not accepted for engineering but MAY be offered a spot for the arts & sciences. Another option that sometimes happens is being offered a spring admission (start in January instead of spring/August).

I just sent USC a letter explaining the situation, hopefully it wont be an issue, but with a 33 and a 3.91 GPA, I’m fairly confident I’ll get in.

I would still suggest sending an e-mail giving a “heads up” to the counselor at USC assigned to your area. It wouldn’t hurt & might be helpful. Our D felt that her contact with the USC counselor were quite helpful in her admission.

Okay this thread is scaring me a little. I filled all my apps out with my 1st semester schedule. However I decided to change it up 2nd semester and take only 5 classes instead of 7. I have not notified any schools yet. I know USC has mid-year report, when do we send that? Do we have to mail a transcript to them or just enter the grades online? And should I notify USC and all the other schools of the schedule change or just wait till April when decisions have been made, because I think telling them about the schedule change will lower my chances of acceptance.
