D21 is applying to highly selective schools next year. We have to request any changes to her schedule in the next couple of days. I only really care if people think it will give an AO pause that she is slacking. Otherwise I’m going with it but would like confirmation that this looks ok.
She is on a block system. First semester:
Dual credit American Government (taught on campus at the local directional unless they change that due to covid.)
AP Language
AP Chem
So that’s 2 classes taught at the HS, 1 at the college.
Second semester:
AP Stats
AP Spanish
Physics
1/4 of an agriculture class (required by her main EC)
3 1/2 classes at the HS 3rd quarter, 4 4rh quarter.
She has already had Calc. Getting “most rigor” checked will not be an issue.
Does this look like enough? I’m trying to give her time for essay writing in the fall, and just overall not killing herself her senior year. Plus I am not super optomistic about how classes will end up running due to COVID, so if I can get her a couple of blocks free I think that’s good.
We have 5 blocks, which is insane but they do it to squeeze more teaching out with less teachers. Almost everyone ususally has at least one study hall, sometimes 2. Lots of seniors only take 2 classes at a time.
Forget it! I just saw AP language! I initially read that wrong!
I’m not as familiar with block scheduling but it looks like you have the basis covered with the core courses.
I’m assuming there wasn’t a multivariable calc option over stats?
No, stats is the last math class she can take at the HS, and the college schedule doesn’t really work to take it there, which was kind of my plan a couple years ago but the college only offers it at a time that wrecks her HS schedule.
I figured as long as she hit the basic 5 (math, science, social studies, english, and foreign language) she would be ok. I just get paranoid because technically you can have 10 academic classes at our school. It would be miserable, but it is possible. So she and I always are torn between trying to keep things sane and trying to take advantage of all of the opportunities.
This is actually the first year that she is seeing the benefit of holding back. She really wants to take anatomy, and there is a Holocaust class she wants to take. One of her old teachers is no longer at the HS, but teaching a Women’s studies class at the college she has thought about taking in the evening.
But if this looks ok, I think she should go with it. She is probably going to have her nose to the grindstone for the next 4 years, plus hopefully 4 more of med school and 3-? ofresidency. She finally sees the value of taking 5 minutes off, which I think is good.
The critical piece is that the guidance counselor thinks it’s rigorous enough and will indicate as such on their report to colleges.
You have all the basis covered with the core courses.
Thanks. GC will be ok with it, she is probably still heavier than typical for top students here honestly. They kind of encourage the seniors to take it a bit easy. Partly for mental health, but honestly partly because they can hire less teachers if the seniors are essentially half time. Budget trumps all around here.
She ended up adding 2 more 1/2 classes. She has been really wanting to take a field experience class where they go to the hospital and rotate through some different departments. Lots of kids interested in the medical field take it, that’s the class she had been most looking forward to being able to take since she saw it as option for seniors her freshman year. I figured they just canceled it due to COVID, but she missed it due to a schedule conflict. So as long as she will take a prerequisite class at the same time, she can add it.
That will give her 3 classes in the fall, and then 5 third quarter and 4 4th quarter. Which is the equivalent of 7 1/2 full year classes in a normal schedule. So much for taking it easy. Not really worried that it might look like she is slacking anymore.

Plus three 9 week classes second semester. The ag class she had originally, plus medical terminology and the field experience class.
At least her (comparatively) easy semester is when she is writing college essays.
That’s a really rigorous schedule. Could he take Spanish or Stats at the college? It’d be the same page but at least fewer actual hours in class.
That’s a good idea I will check schedule
