So I was just admitted to Cal (Letters and Sciences) and am planning on either majoring in Computer Science or in Media Studies (with a minor in Computer Science) and was wondering how my schedule looks to others who were/are in my shoes. I would like to get some feedback on certain classes that I should take or professors I should watch out for. I am planning on taking CS 61A, MEDIA ST 10, and MATH 1A. I am also looking for one more class to take to either fulfill a breadth requirement or a class that I could take for fun that would peak my interests. I do love films and visual arts as well if that helps with any suggestions. Please feel free to let me know what you think about my schedule as well as suggestions for additional classes I should potentially take up. Thanks!

What is your previous CS and math background (including AP scores and college courses taken while in high school)?

For math course selection, see these links:
http://math.berkeley.edu/courses/choosing/placement-exam (if you have not taken calculus in high school)
http://math.berkeley.edu/courses/choosing/ap-exams (if you have taken calculus in high school)
<a href=“Exams | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley”>Exams | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley; (if you have taken calculus in high school, you can try the old Math 1A and 1B final exams to check your knowledge)

Do you need to take courses for the L&S reading and composition requirement? If so, check department web sites to see which courses and instructors have readings which are most interesting to you.

As the other poster said above, unless you have already fulfilled the Reading and Composition requirement by getting a 5 on the AP Literature exam, then you should definitely consider taking an R1A or R1B. Berkeley strongly recommends that people try to knock them out in your first year at Cal, before the course load becomes to heavy to accommodate them.

I got a 5 on AP English and Language so that takes care of R1A, I believe. And I also took English 101 and 103 through our Dual Enrollment program and it said on the website (assist.org) that that would take care of my Reading and Composition requirements, is that correct?

You mean to say that English 101 and 103 are courses at a community college that fulfill Berkeley’s English R1B according to http://www.assist.org ?

Yes, that.
