I'm pursuing a CS major through L&S and I'm trying to work out a schedule for Fall 2012 (and a long-term plan). I really don't know anything about this so I would appreciate any help. I'm kind of shooting n the dark here so if my schedule raises your eye-brows do let me know.

I'm thinking:
1) CS 61a
2) Math 54 (I have Calc BC credit w/a 5)
3) American Cultures
4) breadth req.?

Is it ill-advised to take 2 CS 61's in one sem.? Also, when can I reasonably expect to be able to declare as a CS major? I have a good amount of AP credit (8-9 tests total). Thanks.

I would also consider taking any pre-requisites for secondary majors or minors if you are considering any. Additionally, try to strategically take an AC course that also fulfills a separate breadth requirement as the 4th class you have listed; in other words, I’d use your #3 and #4 class spots (as you listed them) to fulfill two breadth and the AC requirements (one class can fulfill both AC and one breadth). There’s a more detailed thread elsewhere on the forum, but you may need to self-study some material that the Berkeley equivalent of Calc BC covers but Calc BC itself does not.

Yes, you can take Math 54 after a 5 on calculus BC, but there is a bit of material that you may need to self study if you take Math 54. See the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html .

Have you completed reading and composition (5 on AP English literature)? If not, you may want to consider a reading and composition course (a B course if you have a 4 on AP English, an A course otherwise).

American Cultures courses can fulfill categories in the L&S 7 course breadth described here: [Office of Undergraduate Advising: 7 Course Breadth](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/7breadth.html)

Some courses like ESPM 50AC and ESPM C12 / English C77 can fulfill any one of multiple L&S breadth categories.

CS 70 may be another course to consider adding to your list of possible courses.

Between now and when you register, you will be given a lot more information about planning your schedule and the various options and requirements. Students coming into L&S will be given on-line training, then at CalSO you will go over the choices a bit before you register for your first semester (phase I) which will be done during the CalSO.

As you get closer, once you go through the training and are nearing your CalSO date, we can help with more focused and valuable advice.
