Schedule for my first semester....

...@ Cal

Asian Studies 10 4 units
Linguistics 55a 4 units
English 130d 4 units
English 100 4 units

Is 16 units too much? I mean I don't plan on working at all, gonna socialize but only plan on doing so from thurs-sat. sun i chill and plan on going to church.

Oh yeah one more question. For our first day of class, if the discussion/lab of a class precedes the time of a lecture we don't have to go right? sounds easy, but i get paranoid on those kinds of things. thanks.

Personally I think its best to minimize your schedule as much as possible, because you don't yet have any idea what you are getting into. Everyone I talked with during my CalSO also recommended the same thing.

This is what I've signed up for:

Physics 110A (Electromagnetism and Optics) 4 units
Physics 137A (Quantum Mechanics) 4 units
Scandinavian 1A (Beginning Swedish) 4 units
Computer Science 9H (Self-Study Python) 1 unit

yeah i'm still thinking of replacing my asian studies class with a decal class or something.

As far as Decal goes, it's my understanding that a lot of the classes are difficult to get into. Most of them determine who gets in using a lottery, so if you rely on a Decal class in order to reach the 13 unit minimum, you may not get into any, and than I'm not sure what would happen.

I'm really happy I found out about these CS9 1 unit independent study programming classes, because that makes it really easy for me to get 13 units.

after approximately 20 more minutes of planning classes, I cut the load down to 14 units. replaced the asian studies with a Physics for future presidents class (listed as purely conceptual) so it should be interesting.

At first I really didn't want to let go of my linguistics (fufills my american cultures) but realized that I have to be realistic (first semester at Cal after all). So I'm replacing that with a psychology class that is made for non-psych majors that are junior/senior standing.

I guess I'll get a Decal class next semester.

Ill be in that AS 10 with you.

Once you've complete a semester you'll have a much better idea of how much of a load you can handle, but right now it's best not to take any chances (unless it's neccessary).

I'm signed up for 17 units , and unfortunately I've already ordered my textbooks so I'm probably going to stick with it, but do you guys think this is too much, if i worked as well as went to school (currently looking for a job)?

English 45A/English 45B (need these two for major reqs.) - 4 units each
German 1 (basic first level German) - 5 units
Linguistics 100 (also fulfills a major req., but I'm really looking forward to this class) - 4 units

Classes only on MWF.

duogmeg: Do you have any previous experience with german? Basic german is extremely similar to english so it's really easy, but I have no idea how much that class covers. Once you reach a certain point german gets a lot more confusing and I was never able to understand it, but at my college that wasn't until the second semester.

Eirenarch: I do have some - albeit very limited - experience with German. I tried learning by myself a few years ago w/ tapes and from that I've only retained the very rudimentary stuff; also I have most of the pronunciation rules pretty well down from studying German lieder songs and singing German in choir.

I was kinda banking on it being mostly easy workbook exercises so I wouldn't have to stress too much and could focus on the other three classes I need. Hopefully I'm right but if not I'll be in danger of having my head cave in. :/ I was planning on doing German every semester while I'm @ Cal.

last year when i had my first semester at Cal i found a few things helpful...

definitely take 1 "fun class"... decal is perfect for that and you shouldn't have any problems getting at least one of them. keep checking the schedule for decal and sign up as soon as they release the class list for fall.

overload on classes that sound even remotely interesting and go to all the classes for a couple of days (even if they overlap a bit), after you have seen what kind of work is expected then start scaling back and drop the classes that you know are going to be too overwhelming for that first semester (except prereqs of course).

-take all classes for a letter grade and then adjust later in the semester to p/np at least one of your non major classes to take some of the stress away (decal is an automatic p/np).

try not to buy any books for class until you have gone the first day, then when you get your syllabus, see which books or readers are actually going to be used. check each lecture and if you see one of the books only being used in one or two lectures then consider copying those few pages at Moffit library instead of purchasing the entire book (i didn't learn this until the second semester and saved tons of money on supplemental books) especially since classes mainly use readers and books are often just supplementary.

I'm currently enrolled in:

History 100.006: Revolutionary Cuba (4 units)
History 100.009: Walls, Separation and Integration (4)
Political Science: 3 Empirical Analysis (4)
Political Science: 137A Revolutionary Change (4)
Political Science: 149A Current Political Trends in Pakistan (4)
Political Science: 179 Undergraduate Colloquium on Political Science (1)

rmking... OMG...i hope you are planning on dropping one or maybe even two of those classes after the first few days of class...that is a lot of units and the readings not to mention the papers are going to be insane for those political science classes.

obdenboondocks... your section class that meets before the lecture will not have anyone there on the first day so you will not need to go to section until after your first day of lecture.

luvtoolearn: LOL. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I was taking your advice! I don't plan on staying in all of those courses. I just enrolled in the ones that jumped out at me. I'm going to go the first week and see which ones win me over.

I plan on double majoring in History & Poly Sci... I'm going to be swimming in books for the next 2 and a half years... joy.
