Hey CCers! I need major help right now. I'm a Sophomore and I need to discuss my final schedule with my GLC (Grade Level Coordinator).
I can either go down the AP path or the IB path. Can you guys help me decide which schedule seems the most challenging/rigorous and which one colleges would like better? I've already decided on IB but I wanna see if I picked the best path for me.
I put down both schedules below. As you can see, IB allows me to take 7 periods both years but AP allows me to take only 6 periods both years (but I MAY have 7 periods junior year). Thank you~

AP Schedule:
11th Grade:
AP English Language & Composition
AP Calculus BC (IB Math HL 1 Equivalent)
AP Physics C
AP U.S. History (IB History HL 1 Equivalent)
IB Information Technology in a Global Society
Chinese III Honors
Wind Ensemble

12th Grade:
AP English Literature & Composition (IB English HL 2 Equivalent)
IB Math HL 2
AP Chemistry
AP Government/AP Economics
AP Chinese Language & Culture (IB Chinese SL Equivalent)
Wind Ensemble

IB Schedule:
11th Grade:
IB English HL 1
IB Math HL 1 (AP Calculus BC Equivalent)
IB Physics HL 1 (AP Physics 1 Equivalent? IDK)
IB History SL
IB Chemistry SL/IB Music SL (Still Debating Between These Two)
Chinese III Honors
Wind Ensemble

12th Grade:
IB English HL 2 (AP English Literature & Composition Equivalent)
IB Math HL 2 (I Think AP Statistics Is A Unit? IDK)
IB Physics HL 2 (AP Physics 2 Equivalent? IDK)
IB Chinese SL (AP Chinese Language & Culture Equivalent)
Theory of Knowledge
AP Government/AP Economics
Wind Ensemble

I know colleges view both AP and IB the same, but I feel like with the extra requirements, IB just seems more challenging? IDK. But I don’t think it matters which schedule you do. They both seem really challenging.

Haha no I’m only a freshman but I went to an IB information session at my school to learn about the program. So don’t take my advice too seriously since I’m not even in IB.

I have the IB diploma offered at my school and I chose the AP path because I thought I would have a harder schedule

I would keep in mind the fact that you will have to put a lot of work into IB with the extended essays and CAS hours and TOK (we’ve already had about half (20ish) of the juniors drop out already)
IB classes also have built in assessments throughout the year that are a part of your overall score, like the IOP for IB English while AP classes just have one test at the end of the year

Also, IB tests are significantly more expensive

And you could probably get more college credit by taking AP tests since most colleges only accept HL scores (if college credit is important to you)

Overall it is a very tough decision, but I would talk to some upperclassmen at your school who are in IB and see what their thoughts are (the seniors at my school say it’s not worth it)

I feel like colleges weigh the IB diploma a little more favorably as well (although my school has a lot of non-IB students get into HYPSM so idk)

Either way, you can’t really go wrong
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions
