AP or IB - Help me decide

Hey guys,

I'm choosing my schedule for next year and cant decide between an AP or IB schedule. I like the full menu that AP offers and increased schedule flexibility, but I have been hearing that IB is more respected and renowned and I like how it goes in depth into the class.

Which schedule do you think looks better for my Junior year and then Senior year?

AP Calculus AB.......................AP Calculus BC
AP United States History..........AP US Government
IB English HL.........................IB English HL 2
Physics Honors.......................AP Physics B
Student Government................Student Government or Accelerated Bio Research
AP Spanish Language...............AP Spanish Literature
AP Art History........................AP Chemistry or AP Economics

OR

IB English HL.................HL2
IB Math HL w/ AP Calc AB exam...................HL2 with AP Calc BC Exam
IB Spanish HL................HL2
IB Global Politics HL.......HL2 (Pilot course)
IB Chemistry SL 2..........AP Art History or AP Economics
IB Physics SL.................SL2
Student Government

Only you can really answer this question - but I would suggest asking your school’s IB Coordinator, and talking with junior/senior IB diploma students at your school. They are the ones that could give you good insight. Also don’t forget the the IB diploma also includes the Theory of Knowledge class which is 2 semesters, CAS, and an extended essay.

There are also some charts floating around the internet that compare different college’s acceptance rates for IB diploma vs. regular applicants.

Can you take AP calculus BC or IB math HL in one year instead of two?

It does not seem to make sense that if you are two years ahead in math (i.e. one of the top students in math) that you should have to take calculus over two years instead of one year like normal (not advanced in math) college freshmen.

As far as college credit goes, check the colleges that you may be interested in to see what they accept for credit and placement. But note that IB SL typically gives nothing as far as college credit goes. Some APs, like physics B, are not commonly given subject credit.

Thanks for the responses…I cant take IB Math HL in one year because it is the equivalent of AP Calculus AB + AP Calculus BC + Other math all in 2 years

Your school is doing a disservice to the best students in math by forcing you and the other best students in math to slow-pace what non-advanced college freshmen learn in one year. Just be aware that actual college math will cover material at about twice the speed that your high school covers it.

Common equivalencies (however, these do vary by college):

AP calculus AB ~= first semester freshman calculus
AP calculus BC ~= two semesters of freshman calculus
IB math HL ~= two semesters of freshman calculus
