Carolina Scholars, at least, (not sure if any other types of scholars did this) earlier wrote a letter to Chancellor Holden Thorp... To my surprise, I just got a letter back from him and he wants me to call him and talk... O.o

...Has anyone else gotten a similar letter? Because this kind of intimidates me and I don't what to expect... any input?

I’m a scholar but I didn’t write a letter? Did all of the carolina scholars write one?

I don’t know… sometime in June or July, I got a letter talking about the scholarship money, and it said to write Chancellor Thorp a thank-you-letter, and then afterwards, email someone to let them know I sent the letter - supposedly to release the scholarship money. I suppose you could call the scholarships department and ask?

I beliiiieevee that means that your donor is Chancellor Holden Thorp himself. Everyone has to write their donor a thank you letter.

My son’s donor is also Chancellor Thorp, and he wrote the required thank-you letter. When I saw this post, I asked him if he had received a letter back. He said that no, he hadn’t… and guessed that maybe the OP’s letter had been so good that Chancellor Thorp wanted to get to know her (?) better, but his own letter wasn’t good enough to get a similar response. (As his ridiculously biased mother, I doubt that his letter wasn’t good enough, but it sounds like a plausible theory.)

Perhaps the chancellor has some mutual interests to discuss with Maziana, or perhaps he is simply interested in building a personal relationship with his beneficiary – good luck, and please let us know how it goes when you speak with him!

Thanks for giving some input.

Believe me, my letter wasn’t just that awesome! Surely he replied to someone else; but maybe they aren’t on CC… Well, I guess I’ll see when I finally call…

I just called his office. The lady there set up an appointment to actually meet the Chancellor - I had been under the impression we were just going to talk on the phone. So when I’m on campus but classes have not started yet, I will come to his office and talk from 3pm to 3:30, I suppose…

It seemed to be just about me being a Carolina Scholar, and nothing else. Perhaps other Scholars will meet with their donors too, but their letters will arrive later…

I’m sure he wants to get to know you, so you can be more than just a name on a list to him. And hey, it can’t possibly hurt to count the chancellor as one of your on-campus buddies, can it? Hope when the time comes, you can relax and be yourself and enjoy chatting a bit with him. (Just think of the power: You will be in the chancellor’s inner circle!! How many first year students can say THAT?)
Good luck! :)

I just checked my account, and the scholarship money has not arrived yet so I owe UNC a lot of money. Should I be worried?

The money more than likely will not be applied until the first day of classes thats when other financial aid is applied.
