Scholar's Reception?

He had a great visit… but still on the fence.

So where is he going granipc?

Anyone else attend accepted student’s day? How was it this year?

We were there, it was a very nice day (tad chilly, but sunny). Very nice Presidential speech. Campus was wide open, you could basically go wherever you wanted. Lot’s of people. Definitely sealed the deal for us. My son met a few kids he saw at ECOES a few years ago.

Looking forward to the next 4 years.

That’s good to hear coffee. He will enjoy orientation this summer. My son did the optional orientation trips as well and he liked those too.

For dorms, you get to make a request so do it early to have a better chance of getting your choice. Tell him that Davis Hall odd numbered rooms are the ones that face NYC. It’s the only freshmen dorm with AC (although I don’t think it works all that great). I think the male floors are 2 and 4.

Thank rualum. He plans on doing pre-orientation and orientation. He stayed at Davis during ECOES and liked it. The RA at Humphries told us that they are getting new windows and air conditioning this summer, but He plans on going Davis first if he can get it. I just wish they would send out the enrollment packs already. We sent in deposit over a week ago but was told they would be sending out all the packs at at once.in a few weeks. I was hoping that since we sent it in already we’d get it sooner, but oh well.

Hi coffee12 & rualum. Your postings helped a lot, we appreciate! My son was accepted for this freshman year. We visited S a few weeks ago but missed all the events you discussed. -ceemig

We’re still undecided to sign-up for the pre-orientation. Any ideas on what “City Life Experience” (one of the choices for pre-orientation events) is all about?

Pre-Orientation

coffee12, thanks for the link. If you sign-up for the City Life Exp. are they staying in-campus or at hotels/motels? And if ‘in-campus’, are they checking in early to their regular dorm rooms?

Staying in Dorm… call them tomorrow with any questions, they are very helpful.

Will do, coffee12. Might as well pay also the $400 deposit --funny, we got our plane fares first to East Coast before making this important deposit. My understanding is that you have a freshman as well. We’re new to this ‘college experience’ since he’s our eldest -total rookies… It’s been a fun ride so far and we’re blessed from all the advise & help we got so far.

ceemig- if they do preorientation, they will check into their dorms early. My son did city life and he liked it. They took a bus into the city and basically walked around looking at various sites. I think they went to MoMA one day, and Chinatown at some point. They ate at some italian place and ‘a burger place’. I think they went into the city on 2 days.

We were waiting for those enrollment packs as well. When you get them, just fill out your housing request ASAP. You are allowed to specify a room, floor, building. Don’t worry if you don’t know which room, just pick something like 421 or 221 and they will put you wherever they have room that is closest to it.

My son waited a bit as his chosen roommate kept delaying filling out the app and he still got his first choice, Davis. The kids tend to procrastinate until the very last minute.

Thanks for the tip, rualum. We do remember Davis Hall. Odd number rooms facing the Hudson with communal bathrooms -should be fine with him after spending years in Scouting’s many camps & outings. Are higher floors in Davis, 4th or 3rd, more desirable?

Yeah, I agree, our kids tend to procrastinate nowadays… he will finish as an Eagle Scout but still waited 'till senior year to be one. Canoeing at Pre-O may interest him as well as the City Life Exp. I assume the $200 fee will cover the 4 days from Aug.17-20 (Sat-Tue) and be in his same dorm room for the 8/21st, Wed. Orientation Day. We’ll gladly await that enrollment packs then.

Btw, is it easy to move from Computer Science to Computer Engineering or vise versa at Stevens? Or, they will let you declare towards the end of sophomore year?

I’m not sure which floor is more desirable. 3rd floor is women only. Males are on 2 + 4. If you are on 4, you have to go up a couple flights of stairs to get to your room. That gets old. Floor 2 has entry at grade so no steps to go up (on the other side of the building you enter at 1 and must take 1 flight of stairs.)

Not sure how hard it is to move between those two majors. I am guessing that it is easier to move out of engineering than into it. He should discuss with his advisor.

Thanks for advise rualum… appreciate the great thread too granipc. We’ll keep the floors in mind with thoughts of ‘efficiency’ when we get the enrollment packets. Yes, he’ll have plenty of time to settle on the right major & timely discussion with his advisor. For now, he’s focused on an engineering major with a minor in business. That’s very doable right and I’m sure you know a bunch of kids in S with the same goals in 4-5years (including Co-op programs).

Our family is happy that he picked Stevens over NYU-Poly and for that matter over a couple of UCs plus Sta.Clara Univ. (in Silicon Valley) here in CA. To be honest, parents like us from WestCoast haven’t even heard of Stevens until all these roller-coasters, college process began. Visiting, reading & researching about it –including your very informative threads helped a lot in our decision. Fyi… UC-SanDiego student population number above 41,000+ and UCLA 2013 accepted freshmen alone about 9,000 ~it’ll be an ocean of (student) humanity in all 10 UCs (most other kids would like that!). It was reported that they’ve been accepting a great number of out-of-state/foreign enrollees who are willing to pay close or full price in view of the State’s current budgetary problems.

A few of them from his high school were driven a few miles to UCLA and to my dismay then –as a life-long Bruins sports fan ready to root for the winningest sports school in all college- he wasn’t overly impressed by its Westwood campus & their tech.program/s. Oh, well, I’ll be proudly rooting for the S Ducks then whenever & wherever!!! (& not that neon yellow/green colors of Pac12’s Oregon mascot!) Stevens is a perfect fit for him and with the Institute’s focused & hands-on programs, we believe, will mold him to be a responsible adult one day. Hoboken –its mix, the composition- even reminds us of our small, close-knit community in the Foothills quietly hidden and yet close to hustle & bustle of freeway-hungry busy LA (much like Hoboken to busy Manhattan I guess).
