Scholarship notification from U of Cincinnati?

I just received notification this week. I have 33 ACT and very high grades and AP classes, and was offered only $4K. Was offered full tuition at UC, and much more at Miami and Ohio State. That takes Cinci off the list for consideration.

I agree. My daughter had almost exactly the same offers from other schools and had great stats, and Cinci’s offer was terrible. OSU is a higher choice anyway.

My daughter was admitted to the medical sciences program. She aims to be a physician but we have no idea how good the program is because they are offering it as a major only from last year. Any insights would be welcome. Thanks.

I believe the 34 average was for engineering students in the University Honors program. I took a lot of notes during that conversation…

Thanks for the clarification.

Heard about a freshman engineering scholarship today. Snail mail letter dated 3/11.

DS also heard about Freshmen engineering first year scholarship. Good luck to all those waiting!

Received a wonderful letter today! After some disappointments lately and turning down an invitation for a full tuition invite at a great University that wasn’t a match, the smile today was so worth it! Thank you CEAS!

Can you pl. share how much is Engineering scholarship ?

@presario98 Mine was $4000.

$3,500 here. @jazzysaxophone - if you don’t mind me asking, what are your stats? Also, are you in-state?

Thank you !

@cabeohio Yes, I’m an in-state student. Here are some of my stats:

Intended Major: Civil Engineering
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian
ACT: 31 (Math = 34, English = 32, Reading = 30, Science = 30)
GPA (unweighted): 4.0
Class Rank: Top 5%
Classes: AB Calc, AB Human Geo, AP Physics 1 and 2, AP US Gov’t
Extracurriculars: Marching Band (Section Leader), Robotics Club, Chinese Club, Symphonic Band (Section Leader)

Thanks, @jazzysaxophone. I’m still on my never-ending quest to understand how universities hand out scholarship money…

I received this email on the 25th-
…We are working with a new computer system this year, and unfortunately there have been some complications… I would love to get your admission decision and scholarship decision completed for you as soon as possible… Hope it helps

Sorry that I’m late to this discussion @ElCid86 – from our experience a year ago (my son did receive a modest CEAS scholarship).

At orientation, I dropped in on one of my old professors, who is now an assistant dean at CEAS and had signed my son’s scholarship letter (I wanted to thank him personally, and it seemed like he really did kinda, sorta remember me from 30 years ago).

There is definitely a large pool of CEAS students who deserve scholarships (by comparison, my son did have a 34 ACT composite score), and he received a modest one-year scholarship. His award letter did say that the one-year is primarily due to the fact that Co-op students start earning in their second year.

But my old professor said directly, “we have so many students that deserve this, and we try and spread it around as best we can.” I felt even more thankful that my son earned a scholarship.

By the way, he’s been very happy there this last academic year. They finish up by the end of the month.

I should have also mentioned – my old professor said they don’t get the donations that they’d like to get, in order to support getting great students. The scholarship amounts handed out are directly related to the money they have available. I don’t think this is a university-wide thing, it’s just CEAS.

@EICid86 did your son end up selecting UC? I am looking at engineering schools in the Midwest for son, but OH would be OOS for us. His stats are very similar to your son’s (including Eagle). We have fingers crossed for NMF in September, but hard to tell since they changed the test last year. UC is not familiar to me but came up on our radar. We have a couple days off in August and might go look there and at Miami. Any advice? Thanks!

Visiting both UC and Miami in one trip will show you a great contrast between an urban large school and a more rural, classic campus at a smaller school. If you are a soccer fan try to catch a Cincinnati FC game as well. Not every college campus can offer access to professional sports. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks. Love soccer. We hope to catch a Reds game while we’re there too.

We did one of the CEAS programs (which included a campus tour) in a morning at UC; then left a little early at lunch, and drove up to Oxford – about an hour’s drive – for an afternoon info session/general campus tour. Because of time constraints we weren’t able to fit in anything with Engineering at Miami; admittedly, however, I didn’t try to plan for any special tour or session with Engineering at Miami due to travel constraints.

@Cheeringsection is right – there is a tremendous contrast between UC and Miami; and if you like one, chances are you will not like the other. Although Miami is a smaller school than UC, it is not really that small: it has about 16,000 undergrads there, whereas UC has about 25,000 undergrads (UC seems to have grown a lot in the last few years, with lots of construction on campus).
