Scholarship notification from U of Cincinnati?

The last 2-3 freshmen classes at UC have been of record size. They hope to rival OSU in size (all campuses) someday. Make sure you look at a breakdown of size by campus for UC when comparing it to other schools. Clifton is the “main” campus.

@Cheeringsection and @gandalf78 S liked both schools, go figure! Parents liked both schools too. I’m a little nervous about the record size freshman class size at UC. While it’s great that student interest is growing at UC, it could also mean that it’s tougher to get into classes and housing, tougher to get merit scholarships, etc. Miami application rate and competitiveness for admission must be growing too, from what I can tell. It looks like they raised the bar for their merit awards across the board vs. last year. Miami also has a bit of a “party school” reputation, but that didn’t come through on the tour. Nevertheless, both schools appear to be in the running and represent solid choices for S.

Glad to hear both schools are in the running! It is good to have many options so that the student has a choice once he decides what he really wants. They are both good choices but very different choices.

We were told that all scholarship notifications will be included in the letter that includes any need-based aid, which is sent out in late February or early March.

@BubbleGirl90
I was accepted January second week. And I was told later that my package has been mailed already (including scholarship info).

@mundanewarrior, did you get your scholarship award? Was it Cincinnatus? Admissions is still saying that most scholarships will be awarded in March.

@BubbleGirl90
Not yet. I think I should ask them again. But then, international postage takes time.

I was accepted on the second week of December, waiting for scholarship info to see whether I should confirm my admission or not. As an international student, the only scholarship I’m eligible for is UC Global. Eurgh, I hope those will take less time than Cincinnatus. Waiting until March would be awful.

Our daughter received her acceptance to DAAP Industrial Design last month, and an invitation to the Honors Program a week later. No notification of student aid has been posted to her incoming UC student account yet. She has her heart set on DAAP after being admitted to SCAD, CCS, University of Michigan, and others, so we’ve got our fingers crossed there will be some decent scholarships to lessen the sting of out-of-state tuition. We’ve always planned for her to go to a state school in Michigan, so private art college and out-of-state public college tuitions are quite a shock.

My daughter’s (accepted to DAAP ID) merit scholarship was posted on her Catalyst account as of this morning. She recieved a Cincinnatus Century scholar award and OOS boost…

DAAPDad, I hear you - we have always assumed my daughter would attend one of the FL state colleges, so the OOS tuition (and underwhelming merit aid!) comes as a shock!!

Daughter was accepted in December, received award letter yesterday and she received nothing. Good GPA, average SAT scores and amazing EC’s. Accepted at 9 other schools so far, all offering major scholarship money. UC was very high on her list. Disappointing that she is being overlooked. Not uncommon though from what I am hearing from other parents with children there. Will pay extra few $$$ for her to attend private school before paying for full tuition at UC.

@collegeDAD2017 same thing here. Daughter was accepted into DAAP for architecture. She has an unweighted 4.0 (can’t get better than that), #1 in her high school class, tons of college credits already, great EC’s and received zilch. Her only downfall was an average ACT. She was pretty disappointed, as were we, that her hard work provided her nothing in the form of merit aid, which she needs.

Sorry about the financial aid offer. Unfortunately, merit aid at almost all schools, including UC, are tied to SAT/ACT scores. I hope your D has other great options.

She has received merit aid offers from other schools which is what surprises me the most. We were told most schools will look at a 4.0 and 1st in class and take that into consideration with her 27 ACT score. Oh well, decisions to make.

@collegeDAD2017, my daughter is on the UC students accepted page and she said that most students with good stats etc. were shocked to get either nothing, or far less than expected. It seems to be a pattern this year. ACT/SAT scores seemed to be the biggest factor so unfortunately if her scores were average that is probably the issue. I hope she finds a good fit elsewhere. My D has 4.3 GPA, rigorous course load, excellent EC’s, national service award, and a 34 ACT. She was invited to the Honors program (they only took 5% or about 330 students this year) and still only got $3500 Cincinnnatus. She was very disappointed and has crossed UC off of her list.

UC appears to consistently try to keep tuition lower for all rather than reduce tuition via merit aid for many students. I encourage all to consider net price rather than scholarship amount when making a final decision on a school. It is not an insult to be “overlooked” for a scholarship but rather a different philosophy in pricing that UC adheres to. Don’t miss the forest for the trees.

Cheeringsection, I appreciate them trying to keep prices lower overall, but I wonder who (if anyone) gets the 6K max when I haven’t seen any big awards, even for the top 5% in Honors. Net price is definitely the bottom line for us, but she will save a minimum of $20K (over 4 years) by going to Miami instead of UC, so it’s an easy decision for us. Miami also has a better program for her major, and guarantees that you will not have a price increase for 4 years which is helpful.

@BubbleGirl90
Agreed. Same here and we are instate. DAAP (Ind Design) selected. Was told (on the portal) fees is 33,452. Given 3K Cincinnatus Scholarship. So Net cost of Attendance is 30,452.!. Easy to make the decision!!. One more college drops of our list. 4.37 W GPA, 14 AP’s, ACT 33.

I wonder how I got $18k/year as an international. Does that mean they give more aid to internationals?
