Does anyone know when and how scholarship notifications will be sent out?

They’re sent out by mail, I’m in Indiana, I got mine yesterday, saying I was invited to the scholarship weekend for the Hollingsworth and Townes.

Congratulations! That is a great honor. Best of luck to you.

I got mine for the Lays and Duke. I’m wondering how many finalists there will be for those? Anybody else out there?

servin, when are the Lay and Duke interviews? The same day as the Hollingsworth and Townes? And I believe somewhere on here, I’ve read they invite 30-40, and about 30 show up. Not sure if that’s for Lay, Duke, Hollingsworth and Townes, or just the first two though.

It is the March 28 - 29. When is Hollingsworth and Townes?

Its one day, April 12. I believe I saw on an old post that there are more people invited to that one, like 80 or 90, obviously all won’t attend though.
So your’s will be small, 30 or 40 I’m guessing.

I was invited too! I am so excited and absolutely scared to death. Furman is one of my top two choices - love it.

Hi, I’m wondering about this also- I haven’t received an acceptance letter or scholarship date notification and it is the 11th! I applied ED first semester, had a scholarship interview, didn’t receive enough money, and decided to roll over my application and scholarship application to RD. At this point, I’m worried that the whole ‘rollover’ thing was lost in transit. I’m wondering if I should call the University since the dates are fast approaching… Can someone calm me down since I’m going insane at 2:30 in the morning.

Kid2010 – Call Admissions and ask. In my experience, CofC is a very applicant friendly, “customer service” oriented college. My s’s HS guidance counseling was not very efficient so he called a number of schools during the application process to check up on his apps. CofC was the most kind and responsive.

OOPS! Furman! Sorry!!

Yes, I would call them. I hope they have good news for you. Do you mind sharing your stats and how much money you were offered? I’m afraid I won’t get a package either with enough money to be able to attend.

Hi, I just called and I was not accepted a second time for a ‘major scholarship’-maybe I’ll still get a little money. My stats are/were a 4.0 unweighted (made my first B last semester) and 4.9375 weighted. 1350 on my SAT and 29 ACT. 5 AP classes; 2 last year (made a 3 and a 4), 3 this year. President of NHS, VP of Key Club, Captain of Academic Team, Mock Trial, um… 3/267 in class rank. Is there something I’m missing?

I was offered 20,800- a year for four years; however, after tuition/room/books/etc. Furman is roughly 48k a year. And with their offer, the Palmetto Scholarship, and the additional 3k from South Carolina I would still be around 60k in debt after graduation. I plan on going into the field of medicine and can not be 60k in debt before graduate school- so I declined and ‘rolled-over.’

Oh well, I am completely covered to attend CofC Honors College through their scholarship plus the states money. I also had a great interview for Duke but highly doubt I will get any money from them. I also applied to Clemson (modest scholarship) along with Emory, Vanderbilt, Vassar, Davidson, and Colgate- and I have heard from none of the later.

Thanks for your help.

Wow. Sounds like good stats. Sorry they haven’t come up with the package you are looking for. Which of their major scholarships were you interviewing for?

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you on a good result from Duke.

Had the email in a folder. Strangely they had phone interviews for ED. Thanks for the luck.

Congratulations! The Admission Committee has approved your application for admission to Furman University as a resident student. You are invited to enroll in the fall of 2010. Choosing Furman will enable you to enjoy many academic challenges and an abundance of extracurricular opportunities. You have been carefully selected from one of Furmans most talented applicant pools, and we congratulate you on your acceptance!

Because of your outstanding high school achievements and co-curricular accomplishments, you are also invited to interview for Furmans most prestigious academic awards, the Herman Warden Lay Scholarship and the James B. Duke Scholarship. The Lay Scholarship covers tuition, room and board and is currently valued at $180,000 over the next four years. The Duke Scholarship is a full tuition award that is currently worth $140,000 over four years.

The Scholarship Committee will conduct your interview via telephone on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Your interview date and time are listed on the attached document. The interview will last 30 minutes, and the call will be placed to your home number unless you request otherwise. So that we may plan accordingly, please RSVP via email to elizabeth.weith@furman.edu or by telephone to 864.294.3411 by Monday, December 14, at noon. To be considered for either the Lay or the Duke scholarship, you must participate in the telephone interview.

The result of your interview will be mailed to you on Friday, December 18. To accept your offers of admission and scholarship, you will need to sign and return the Statement of Intent form and your $400 enrollment deposit, along with a signed copy of the Financial Aid award. They must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2010. By signing this statement and paying this deposit, you make a commitment to enroll at Furman University and agree to immediately withdraw your application to all other colleges.

Please understand that the offers of admission and scholarship are contingent upon the successful completion of your senior year. Your course selection and grades should continue at the high level of performance you have demonstrated thus far.

Again, congratulations on your fine accomplishments! We look forward to your telephone interview next week.

kid2010, congrats on the admissions you are already sorting through. Sounds like you could get a private school education for about 15 grand a year at Furman? In many states that is way below state institution prices.

I completely understand your not wanting to borrow money because of the cost of med school and the debt you will incur there and you may have personal reasons for viewing your FAFSA share as “loan debt”, unless I misunderstand you. But first you must make a plan that makes med school a viable possibility with your UG choices.

But before you dismiss Furman’s offers, I hope you will look over your final choices carefully for the college that is most likely to help you improve your testing ability and most likely to help you step it up to obtain a competitive MCAT score, and for the school that would deliver the rigor most likely to help you get the associated recommendations and lab experiences required to get into med school and to survive it. I would ask for the numbers of students who were med school admits from your final colleges and judge accordingly if you have your heart set on medicine. Emory, Vanderbilt, Vassar, Colgate and Davidson will also expect you to pay your FAFSA share, all have very high costs overall.
You should compare the lab facilities in Townes Science Center with the facilities in your final choices and ask yourself where you will get the quality of instruction required to make it through a series of challenges in undergraduate school that will make or break a premed goal. Good luck as the rest of the answers come in.

I agree - Faline has some great points. I’ve been accepted to a couple of good schools and what Furman has to offer is definately leaning me in that direction. I’m not headed the pre-med route but Furman is strong on all counts. Good luck to all of us.

I’m afraid that the decision was made 3 months ago and the offer has been withdrawn. I found out today through the online ‘status checker’ I was accepted a second time. However, there was no information regarding a scholarship. I’ll wait for the letter, but I suppose Furman wasn’t meant to be.

Thanks, I’ll post again after I receive the letter.

Other than the “named” scholarships for Furman (Lay, Hollingsworth, Townes, etc.) has anyone who has been accepted RD heard about scholarships yet?

I haven’t heard so looks like I’m out. Does Furman have scholarships other than the named ones…didn’t know they did.
