Does anyone know if UMN sends scholarship offers together or separately? My son already received an oos scholarship and we’re wondering if there is a chance he might be offered anything else…
We are oos also. S received a merit scholarship about 3 weeks ago, and this week received a package based on need-but only offered loans. I would think the scholarship you already have would be the only one you get for merit.
That’s what I was thinking too but thought perhaps the smaller ones for study abroad etc. might come separately - I guess time will tell.
I received separately.
@cheesecake51 Would you be willing to disclose what scholarships you received separately and when? I am just curious myself…Thanks.
You can receive them separately. My son received 2 together awhile back (he applied early) and I was told by a UMN recruiter in mid-February that they are still giving out scholarships. From past posts, it seems like they give them out through March{?} You can also try calling UMN admissions and ask them about possible additional scholarships for your son. It seems like they are fairly upfront about possibility (they may not exactly commit on phone, but you may get a better feel for your son’s chances). Let them know that your son is interested in UMN and if additional scholarship would seal deal or make it possible etc. It sounds like your son got OOS tuition waiver? Good luck!
Thanks for info. Yes he got the oos “national excellence” merit - honestly we were hoping for more but based on what I’ve read here he’s probably lucky to have gotten that much.
@mh3353 I received an offer into the Honors Program in December. Then I received the Iron Range scholarship about one week ago.
Kid spoke with Uminn today and it is confirmed no scholarships, no OOS waiver, nothing. 33 ACT, IBPC, AP scholar with distinction, will have at least 9 APs, GPA over 3.9. Applied CSE planning for chem eng.
@alfonsia What state are you in? I find it odd that your son was offered nothing. I am OOS from South Dakota, but I have been offered a pretty nice scholarship. I do think a lot of this has to do with the whole national merit deal though. I was also able to negotiate a smaller, additional scholarship just recently. I guess I have some nice extracurricular activities too, but from what I have heard UMN is pretty stats-based when it comes to scholarships. Your son also sound like he has had a lot more college coursework than I have.
I do wonder if the credit stuff is part of the issue LOL, if he can get done in 3 yrs or so maybe they don't feel the need to offer any carrots? His ECs are nothing spectacular but Utah kids always have a ton of service and he did a nice internship last summer. All I heard when I spoke with people at Uminn is that really, there is no negotiating, and that maybe I just wasn't listening. I suppose reading on CC made me keep asking.
He didn’t get close to NM, but we were a bit clueless at that point and he thought it was just a test to do cold. I will make sure the sibs pay attention to that LOL.
Haha, I took the PSAT cold. Anyhow, still surprised that he had no offers at all. I could be in the same boat had I not decided to take that test the night before. I can tell you now that I am very glad that I did. After seeing the fruits of National Merit status this year, I’m pretty sure my parents will make sure my siblings take that test.
I guess I would call what I did negotiating. I let them know that I had a full-ride elsewhere and am seriously considering it and told them that I thought I had a lot to offer to the university. That was the truth, and that was basically all I said.
Well, his local offer is 5 K a yr plus regents which is basically tuition (instate tuition is about 8K I think), CSM offered 14 K a yr, Northeastern offered 10K a yr from soph, TAMU offered nothing and he is WL at case. In reality outside of the local U, minn will know that the net winner is still Uminn LOL.
The issue may also be the major. CSE and Chem Eng in particular are the most competitive, most in demand and draw the highest stat students at Minnesota. His stats don’t really stand out in that major. They are very strong don’t get me wrong.
Sure, I can see that, but some posts here don’t back that up. And no one enters to chem eng as a frosh unless kids with a lot of pre reqs credits can do that.
@Alfonsia I got in-state tuition from Texas with a 2350 SAT and probably a few better ECs. Kinda sad that they aren’t giving out much more…
I have made peace LOL. I really only persisted based on stats posted by people here.
@Alfonsia They’re prolly in-state. ;-;
