Scholarship Recs

For the recommendations for the WashU scholarships (any of them that require recs), are we allowed to use the same teachers that did we used for the common app?

Yes, but the instructions say to send separate copies for each application form. Check at the bottom of the one(s) you are considering.

It says that WashU should receive the materials by Jan. 15, not postmarked.

Do they allow a bit of leeway about that or if they arrive next Monday the 18th am I screwed??

The track coach said to make sure to make the deadline - use FedEx if necessary. Yeah, DS is scrambling, also!

I asked this question in another thread, but maybe this thread is better:

Does the Danforth scholarship require a rec?

I have WashU’s Scholarship brochure right in front of me, and I looked on the website as well, and there are not many details about the Danforth (maybe because kids have to be nominated for it?). My daughter already sent in her materials, but now I am a bit worried that the Danforth scholarship may have required a teacher rec. Can anyone shed light on this?

No, Danforth does not need an additional teacher rec. They will use the one that got the person nominated.

The Danforth Selection Committee can see your Common App essays and recommendations. They asked me a question or two in my interview that only appeared on my Common App.

You could send in another rec if you like, but it’s not required. Also, for some reason, the apps were due on the 15th last year, but the deadline was extended until the 20th, so check the website to see if they do it again, and maybe it was bring some added comfort.

This is what the website shows. I called Admissions to double-check, and they confirmed that the new deadline is January 19. Thank goodness, since my son hasn’t started his essays yet! KEEP IN MIND that Monday is a holiday, so I guess stuff will have to be FedExed on Friday. So this is really a one-day extension for all practical purposes.

“The application deadline for Academic Scholarship and Fellowship Programs for the Class of 2014 (our fall 2010 freshman class) is January 15, 2010.
All application materials must be received by our office no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.
The online application for Academic Scholarship & Fellowship Programs will be unavailable after 5:00 p.m. Central Time on Tuesday, January 19.
All scholarship materials will be sent to the faculty committees on Tuesday, January 19 for review.”

Well, I am slightly glad to hear about the January 19th thing because I found out just today that all materials were supposed to be received by January 15th…which disheartens me because I submitted all the essays on Monday, it was just the teacher recommendation forms which were overdue.

They were all mailed out on January 15th, so will they get there on time?

@greenangel: It all depends on where you live and when you mailed them. If you put it in the mail before the pickup time for Friday, then I would say that you have a pretty good chance of them getting there on time (it would get picked up and processed and hopefully will be on its way today). If you put it in after the pickup time, however, then it wouldn’t have been picked up until today (Saturday) and since Monday is a holiday and no mail runs, then you might be cutting it close.

But I’m sure it will be on time. So don’t stress. :)

Yes, it really depends on where you live. I can tell you that mail takes forever to get anywhere from where we live in Maine! Even overnight FedEx can be risky, so I hope we’re OK. A couple of times, FedEx hasn’t made it on schedule, so we’ve had our money refunded. Kind of defeats the purpose, though. Good luck!

So, is there NO WAY to get this scholarship application sent on time if the teacher rec (the same one they already have for the college application) does not arrive on Tuesday? I must say, that makes this a very frustrating experience. First, that WUSL does not give out merit scholarships unless you apply, and then that the scholarships have to arrive by a certain date. Most colleges (and IRS!!) accept materials as ‘on time’ if it is postmarked a certain date. Yes, I’ve known all along about scholarships, but why add an extra day and not announce it until we can’t really act on it? I mean, I was ready to wash my hands of the scholarship possibility last week bc I knew he couldn’t make the 15th. Now that it’s the 19th, it’s still too late.

limabeans, maybe you could call to see if they would accept a fax? That’s the only thing I can think of.
