Scholarship Reference Question

Is it considered appropriate to ask a current professor for a letter of recommendation? No one has ever told me not to do this, but I try to steer away from doing so because I'm worried it would seem a bit presumptuous to ask for a letter of recommendation when my final grade has yet to be determined. I didn't do that good of a job staying in touch with former professors, so I'm wondering if it's better to ask for a recommendation from a former professor, or to go to extra lengths to get to know new professors (if asking a current professor isn't a taboo).
