How hard is it to get your financial needs met 100% at UC Berkeley? Is it true that less than 100 students get the Regent Scholarship (full ride)? Should I not apply to UC Berkeley, because I will not be able to cover all my financial needs?

Yes, a very select amount of people are regent scholars (it’s also not a scholarship you apply for, they pick out the best picks from all applicants to Cal). You can still get financial aid or other scholarships, but it won’t be a full ride (unless you get some outside scholarships to help).

Usually about 200 Regent’s Scholarships are awarded per year. Freshmen and transfer students are eligible.

It is not a full ride, however. The monetary award is based on a student’s financial need. A student with no need will receive $2500 per year. Students with need will have full need met. If your family cannot pay the EFC, then even a Regent’s Scholarship might not make the school affordable.

If you are an in state student with low to moderate income, UCs may be affordable even without a Regent’s Scholarship. Go to the Cal website and look for the net price calculator to see what types of federal, California, and institutional aid you may be eligible for.
