So I was planning on applying to Vanderbilt's Chancellor's Scholarship since it fits my app super well, but I was accepted ED to my top pick. Unfortunately, I still need to pay for college, preferably through private scholarships since merit and need are out of the question. Does anyone know any private scholarships that are similar to Vandy's below?

Chancellor Joe B. Wyatt initiated the Chancellor's Scholars Program in 1985 to recognize students with outstanding leadership, strength of character, academic achievement, and a deep-seated commitment to diversity and social justice. Chancellor's Scholars have worked to build strong high school communities by bridging gaps among economically, socially, and racially diverse groups and have demonstrated significant interest in issues of diversity education, tolerance, and social justice.

I know Rice and Babson have them, but I've already been accepted where I want to go. I'm curious if there are private alternatives.

Thanks!

I hate to ask the obvious…but how did you think you were going to pay for this ED school?

It is very late to apply for large outside scholarships. Most have deadlines that have passed.

Does the college where you got accepted have any scholarships that you can apply for? Or is this a school with need based aid only?

And if this is ED…can you make a decision to accept the admission offer without additional scholarship money? You have a small window of time to accept…or not…that offer.

Most private scholarships are awarded based on merit and/or need. If you haven’t got either of those, what do you have? What compelling reason is there to give you free money to go to college?

With an ED acceptance, you can typically back out if the school is unaffordable, but you cannot wait to compare it with that of other schools.

But, really, you should have checked the school’s affordability before applying ED.

I’m in a financially sound position where I’ll be fine paying. The school I’m going to does not give merit based aid (I don’t want to name it for privacy). I simply would prefer at least a little outside money.

I’ve done a lot of work in high school in the field of bridging communities and handling diversity issues. I’m curious if such private scholarships exist for it since that would be my best shot, I think. I’m asking here since its virtually impossible to find these things on Goggle given how big the buzzword “diversity” is.

Does that make more sense? Thank you!

Since you don’t have financial need, the chances of you getting outside merit awards towards an elite univ is unlikely. Private awards usually take need into account, and are only for one year.

You can contact your GC and ask if there are any local awards to apply to.

Yes. Apply for the Mellon-Mayes in your junior year (if it is offered at your school). They may forgive loans for all four years (as well as substituting for your loans for junior/senior years). This is assuming that you will take out loans (why wouldn’t you?- hint: There is no reason you should not take out federally subsidized loans.). As far as paying your EFC- I am not sure about that; so you may still be out of luck on that one, but I do think they facilitate paid research for your last 2 years, which is like an undergraduate RA.
