Are there a lot of scholarship opportunities for for sophomores if you don't get much financial aid as a freshman? Are scholarships more generous for retaining students? I've heard that retaining students can get more benefits than new/transfer students. Is this true?

As a senior in HS I'm totally psyched about college. WOOT.

FA is based on need. Some schools may offer some additional merit aid if you do well, but that depends on the school. Most merit aid is used to attract good freshmen. Transfer students in general don’t get much.

No…

The best money is given to incoming freshmen.

In some cases, at some schools, for some majors, there are some small scholarships available. However, these are rarely large enough to make an expensive school affordable.

If money is an issue, you need to make sure that you pick a school that will be affordable freshmen year forward. Don’t go to a pricier school and then hope that a later scholarship will pay for later years. That’s not likely going to happen.
