I am a current junior and already know that Tulane is my first choice school. New Orleans is my second home (I live in Atlanta, GA) and would love to have my college experience in such an amazing city. However, if I don't receive any type of scholarships, I'll be stuck at a state school here in Georgia. I don't think I qualify for any type of merit scholarships (I have a 3.7 GPA and will have a total of 5 APs by the time I complete senior year...I'm taking the SAT in March 2015), so I'm just curious as to what other types of scholarships there are. I have plenty of leadership experience and am serving on the Youth Advisory Board for 21st Century Leaders, a non-profit leadership program for Atlanta teens. If any of you are current Tulane students or just have any advice, that would be greatly appreciated.

I also am wondering if it helps at all in the admissions process to be a legacy (my maternal grandfather, uncle on my father's side, aunt and another uncle on my mother's side attended Tulane).

@nolagirl55 - You might have a shot at some merit scholarship money. Really too early to say since you don’t have your SAT score. Also, is that 3.7 weighted or UW? Not to mention you still have all this year to get your GPA even higher.

Tulane has a series of merit scholarships that they award to select applicants without the applicant having to fill out any other forms. They ranged last year from $10,000-$30,000 per year for 4 years (5 if you are an architecture major). The full tuition scholarships do require an additional application, and they are similarly merit based.

Tulane has need based aid as well, of course, and that isn’t just loans. In many cases there can be grant based aid that does not have to be paid back.

Being a legacy can be a small positive, although I think only the grandmother would be considered direct family for legacy purposes. But maybe having that plus a couple of uncles gives a small boost.

Tulane offers many scholarships to students - All applicants are automatically considered for partial tuition merit scholarships in the range of $10000-30000 per year. If your ACT scores are high >33 I would also apply for the Dean, Paul Tulane, and possibly the Community Service award (if you are big in service).

Also do not forget there are other scholarships out there that have nothing to do with Tulane. Talk with your school counselor or go on websites that lead you to outside scholarships because while you may not get the “big scholarship” to Tulane, you can add all these together and that may make it affordable to attend.
