I'm looking into this; the collegeboard website isn't that helpful..
Can anyone give any links?

What schools are you looking at? Usually their websites have a section on scholarships, merit aid, etc.

The reason you won't find music awards on College Board, is that for music majors, these awards are usually based on the audition on their instrument.

The best place to look for information re: scholarships for major and non-majors is on the specific website for the college...and actually look in the music department section. You're more likely to find info there than on the regular scholarship page.

Really...for music majors, music scholarship awards are based on your audition. There are some music education scholarships that also consider other things...interview, for example.

For non-majors, your best bet is to contact the music department and ask them. That is what my daughter did. She wanted to know if there were playing opportunities, and what kinds of things the school(s) had to offer her. They were more than willing to answer her questions.

And if you are trying to source outside music specific scholarships, it can be difficult. There are a number of local, community, regional and national orchestras that offer varying awards. These are usually competion based. Local music societies and organizations can have small amounts, but these tend to be restricted to "local" residents. Strings magazine offers one, open to string performance or music ed majors (info on their website). Music education students can also benefit by checking with their state music educators website, who may or may not offer some. ASTA, MENC and MTNA also have music scholarship links on their webpages.

In general, the options are small, as are the dollar amounts. The competition based scholarships are the larger amounts, and can be significant even at the regional level.
