I have a question about financial aid. After it is calculated, and say you win quite a few scholarships by senior year’s end. Does that make one ineligeble for FinAid or does can the money be put toward lessening a certain amount in it, like the EFC?

Depends on the scholarship. If the scholarship has to be used specifically for the use of paying tuition, than that scholarship will be tacked on as money you are able to contribute. If the scholarship has more lose terms that allows you to use it for education related expenses, it will be considered something more like cash in a student's bank account.

Large scholarships may make a difference, something below a certain amount won't even come on their radar unless Brown specifically needs to release the money.

my understanding is that you are required to report all outside scholarships, and it will be deducted first from your loans and then your grant.

Actually, you can choose where to use the scholarships. You can choose: 1) Loans, 2) Student Contribution to the bill, or 3) Work Study/Employment. Outside Scholarships do not reduce parents' contribution or University Grants (except as noted).

Here's the policy:

Outside Scholarships and your Financial Aid Package
Receiving outside scholarships and tuition benefits is an excellent way to help reduce your need to work and/or borrow student loans while at Brown. When you receive an outside scholarship, our office is required to reevaluate your financial aid package and account for the additional resource. Keep in mind that federal regulations stipulate that an outside scholarship cannot be used to reduce your parent contribution.

Note: This policy does not apply to entitlement awards (State Scholarships, Pell Grants, ACG, SMART and Federal SEOG). Receipt of these funds will result in dollar for dollar reduction in University Scholarship

Outside scholarships can be used to reduce the following:

o Student Contribution from Summer Earnings
o Work-Study/Campus Employment Expectation
o Loans

When you reduce the components of your package listed above, you may reduce the entire student expectation, or what we call student-effort (loans, work-study/campus employment and summer earnings expectation).

What if it happens to go above and beyond the student contribution?

In that case, yes, your grant will be reduced. From FA Office FAQs:

Q. Will outside scholarships reduce my Brown University Scholarship?

A. The entire student-effort portion of your award (loans, work and summer earnings expectation) may be reduced. If your outside awards exceed the amount of your total self-help, your Brown University Scholarship will be reduced.
