Scholarships for Foreign Languages (especially critical languages)

I've used the search function, but I can't find a comprehensive thread that lists where high school kids can go to get money if they plan to study critical foreign languages. I know the federal government pours money into scholarships for languages like Arabic, Farsi, and Chinese -- but where is it?

I am not sure, but I think that most of these scholarships are given to students with advanced standing at colleges, rather than entering freshmen. In any case, I have found info on various college web sites about how enrolled students can apply for these grants, but I haven't seen any info geared to high schoolers.

The government has a program called the "Strategic Language Initiatives" to encourage Americans to learn languages that have been determined to be critical to our national security: Mandarin, Arabic, Urdu, Russian, Hindi

For high school aged students, this money is being given to schools in order to hold teacher conferences and summer programs for high school students:

Money was also awarded by the US State department to several study abroad programs to sponsor language based study abroad programs. My son attended this one in Cairo last year:

This year the grant was doubled and they are sending 24 kids instead of just 12.

For college undergraduate students, money is being awarded for summer travel and for colleges to increase the classes in those languages.

plus, some time on google looking for Arabic Summer Programs, Arabic Study Abroad, Arabic Scholarships, (or the another language) will yield tons of sites to check.

Yeah, it seems to me that money spent on high school students goes towards establishing K - 12 programs, whereas the money spent on university students goes toward scholarships for college undergraduates already enrolled. I've found next to nothing on scholarships for high school students who want to study critical foreign languages at the university level.

they have found that money invested in programs rather than individual students has yielded the best results.

The military offers some nice ROTC scholarships and they are always looking for critical language majors.

As far as scholarships for critical language majors for high school students entering college -- they know that traditionally, students change majors and without a way to insure that you will complete a major awarding money can really be ineffective.

I think the SMART grant ($4000 a year) is for science, math and certain languages. But it is for Junior/Senior year and you have to be eligible for PELL.

what if you are American and already fluent in Arabic? Any money in that?
