I’m opening a can of worms by asking, but what is your criteria in defining “top schools”? While there is a good depth of knowledge of many of the Ivys, Cornell is not frequently mentioned on this subforum. I

There might be some info in these:

Ivy League schools offer need based aid ONLY. They do not offer “scholarships” for merit…only aid based on need. That would include Cornell.

WHat do you mean by NEED BASED AID??

DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR THaT??

SAT2350…I would suggest that you go to the financial aid websites for all of the colleges to which you are applying. They are VERY clear on what kinds of aid they offer AND how you go about applying for such aid.

Cornell and ALL of the other Ivy League Schools offer ONLY need based aid. They do not offer scholarships of any kind to undergraduate students. ONLY NEED BASED AID…which is aid based on the financial need of your family. If you want to know about Cornell…I believe to apply for need based aid at Cornell, you need to fill out the CSS Profile and the FAFSA. The FAFSA is available as of January 1. CSS Profile can be filled out now. I do not know Cornell’s deadlines, but if they are after the first of the year…just wait and do both forms at the same time.

If you want need based aid…YES…you have to apply for it.

Re: scholarships for music. There are some fine schools which do offer scholarships for non-majors. However the deadline for applying for some of the more generous scholarships may have passes (December 1). Skidmore and Davidson both have very nice scholarships by audition for non-majors.

If you gave us an indication of the specific schools, someone here might be able to help you out specifically. BUT with no idea of what schools you are talking about…it’s very hard to give you answers (except that the Ivies don’t give scholarships…that’s an easy one).

Our daughter is not a music major. She contacted the orchestra director and department chairperson at EVERY school to which she applied to find out what they had to offer students who were not music majors. Perhaps you should start there.

For more info about applying for need based aid (which has nothing to do with music scholarships based on playing ability)…you might want to journey over to the financial aid and scholarship section of this forum.

The link to CC’s financial aid forum is here: [Financial Aid & Scholarships - College Confidential](Paying for College - College Confidential Forums). Like thump says, specific financial aid requirements are detailed on each institution’s website. Music (talent based scholarships) be they for majors or non-majors are a different ball game altogether, and the requirements are typically within the school’s music department website. Info may or may not be within the financial aid webpages, so it pays to read deeply.

Some deadlines may have already passed for merit/talent scholarships, but need based aid is not awarded until the FAFSA, CSS Profile and/or institution specific forums are due, typically Feb1. Check all dates individually.

Re: Deadlines…the vary wildly from school to school. Also, if an applicant has applied Early Decision and needs need based aid, there is usually a priority deadline for the financial aid filings so that the school can prepare an estimated financial aid award to send with an acceptance package. This is typically early November. BUT you would need to check EACH website YMMV.
