Hi all,
I am an American citizen and have lived and studied in India. I wish to join Michigan with a specific major and career goal in mind. Family income is less than $60k. What are my chances for getting a full ride?
Here are my stats-
CGPA 10/10 (probably converts into 4 GPA)
ACT 32
EC won 3 consecutive MUNs and many other smaller ecs
Are merit scholarships generous? Overall review of Umich.
Have you already been admitted? Generally international students don’t get scholarships and your stats are not at the top of the applicant pool
You have no chance of getting a full ride from UMich. I’m sorry but you were mis-informed.
As an international student, I don’t think you’ll get any fin aid, to be frank. Unfortunately, that would make UM unaffordable to you.
Have you even been admitted? Your ACT is kind of low for UM admitted students. Thus, any “merit” scholarships are for those with near perfect ACT/SATs - – many of whom apply.
Sorry I missed that you have US citizenship. But the answer is the same. UMich is a highly sought after school. Its merit scholarships are literally, for the top of the line students in the state (it’s a public school, partially funded by the State of MI) and then, elsewhere.
Negthergolem, the odds are not good. Michigan gives out very few full rides. Literally two or three dozens annually…out of 6,500 freshmen. That’s less than 1%. When you consider that the top 25% of Michigan students graduate from high school with perfect GPAs and SAT/ACT over 1500/34, making it to the top 1% requires incredible credentials…and no small amount of luck.
No realistic chance for merit. A 32/4.0 and not from Michigan may not even get accepted these days.
But they do give financial aid, and you are a citizen. Use the NPC calculator on their site to see what they might be able to give you.
Umich rarely gives merit based scholarships, and the fact that you are not a Michigan resident means that it is much more unlikely. I as an in state student couldn’t even get anything. Out of state students should be expected to pay full if they wish to attend, and that is the way it should be as a public university.
WIth a family income less than $60k (and typical assets for a family of that income), you have an excellent chance of getting substantial financial aid. Out of state students are getting substantial financial aid now. Use the net price calculator to get an idea of what you might have to pay.
That is correct brantly. Michigan is pushing hard to meet 100% of aid for OOS (not including international) students. A large chunk of the recent $4 billion campaign aimed improving financial aid for OOS students.
Alexander are you able give more info on your post #8? My OOS D was admitted Fall 17. According to the “net price calculator” it looks like we will have to pay out of pocket ~50% of total costs. ~25% comes in the form of grant $ and the remaining ~25% they expect student loans. We suspect she will be able to cover most of the ~25% loan through internships. So, we are left with ~$31K out of pocket. Would be nice if Michigan covered more of that $31K. Thanks for any information or additional resource links.
As I know, Stamps Scholarship offers full ride to 4 oos and 18 in-state. The scholarship will disappear if a student who offered the scholarship decides not to attend U-M.
If you did the NPC correctly, your FA offer should approximate the NPC result. There’s really nothing else you can do at this point except make sure you got the forms in on time and provide any additional info they ask for. If you feel that the offer does not reflect the NPC or if you feel they might have not considered some part of your need, you can file an appeal.
By the way, your daughter can pay off her loans from the salary of her full-time employment (not internships). She will be a college graduate by the time the loans are due.
OK. Thanks. That’s kinda what I expected.
In terms of the stamps scholarships, the number offered per year varies. With the class of 2020, there are 16 students that accepted it and decided to attend.
2015 Shipman Scholarships: 30 total, 15 in-state, 15 OOS. 25K for in-state (full ride for underclassmen), 40K for OOS. Spread proportionally over LSA, COE, others. You don’t apply. They just call you out of the Blue!
