i’m planning on applying to top canadian universities (mcgill, university of toronto, waterloo) for undergrad. i don’t want to end up being in a lot of debt when i graduate, so are there any websites where i can apply for scholarships specifically for canadian universities? is there a canadian version of huge scholarship websites like college express and cappex?
also, i looked at university of toronto’s website and saw that there are scholarships where they offer 10k/year, 20k/year, and full ride to outstanding students. how competitive is it for the scholarships? i know this is an out of reach goal, but i’d like to get one of those scholarships so i’m not a financial burden to my family.
would…
a perfect gpa for grades 10-12 (in all honors and 10-13 ap classes) and near-perfect test scores
4s and 5s on all ap tests
being actively involved and actively competing in 5-6 clubs
having leadership roles in 2-4 of those clubs
…be sufficient enough to have a good shot at getting one of those scholarships as an asian applicant?
also, how does one qualify for financial aid? i don’t know much about it, but i don’t think i am poor enough to receive a large amount of aid or rich enough to not receive any at all.
How much can you afford? What are you thinking of majoring in?
I noticed on another thread that you are a dual US/Canadian citizen, applying from the US. As such you are going to find that by US standards university is VERY reasonably priced in Canada, and that with your stats you should be in good shape at pretty much any university in Canada. I think that you can relax and get some sleep.
We didn’t qualify for need based aid in Canada. In our experience merit aid was awarded just based on the regular application. However, at Canadian schools (unlike US schools) we found out about merit awards quite a bit later than we got admissions results. As such if you are applying now to Canadian schools you might get acceptance letters relatively quickly (particularly given your excellent stats) but you might not find out about merit aid for quite a while. Thus I think that you will need some patience in terms of waiting to see what it will cost. Also, you might have to specifically ask McGill about “Canadian born abroad” tuition to see if you qualify.
If you’re a Canadian citizen and low income, you are eligible for financial aid from the province. If you’ve lived in Canada, you would apply to the province in which you lived. If you haven’t lived in a province, you would apply to the province where the university is. Here’s Ontario’s website for example https://osap.gov.on.ca/AidEstimator1819Web/enterapp/enter.xhtml
Those full ride scholarships are extremely competitive and are only open to non-Canadians.
