Hi I am an international student looking to apply to canada and wanted to know whether universities in canada offer merit or need based scholarships to international applicants and to what extend those scholarships can cover.

bump…

Hello! For Canadian universities, financial aid is only available to Canadian citizens (to the best of my knowledge), but if you’re an international student, you should be able to get a merit scholarship if your grades are high enough. Most of the merit scholarships at Canadian universities are based on your Grade 12 average. I received one from U of Toronto valued at $5,000 when I applied last year, due to my extremely strong senior year grades and (probably) SAT scores.

There are certain merit scholarships that you need to complete a separate application for, such as the one at McGill (you need to write two essays and submit two letters of recommendation). Note, however, that McGill’s scholarship is highly competitive as the highest level of scholarship offered is essentially a full-tuition, renewable one.

Thank you. I will check out the McGill scholarships:) I have outstanding high school grades from the top high school in my country.Do you think my low sat scores of 2070(math740, C.r.600,writing730) will disqualify me for good enough merit scholarships?

If you have a lot of financial need you should boost your SAT and apply to all the American schools that will meet the full need of international students (many of the Ivies and some liberal arts colleges). I think that gives you better odds at getting generous financial aid than counting on merit scholarships from McGill or Toronto.

Even within Canada some kids get into top schools in the US and not win that much merit money for Canadian universities. Also, you won’t get the benefit of affirmative action for Africans/African-Americans in Canada like you will in the US. It might be slightly easier to get in as an international to McGill or Toronto because you’ll be charged higher tuition but I don’t think your international status or ethnicity will be a factor for merit scholarships.

i’d like to know which unis in canada offer cheap or if ever ful ride tuition for internationals?
