Scholarships & Honors Program

Hey! I’m a senior from WA state, and I applied to AU. It’s one of my top choices, but I have a small dilemma. I’m a Nat’l Merit Finalist, and I’ve gotten some really amazing offers from other, less prestigious schools. American says they offer between 10K and full tuition for finalists, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me what type of scholarship I might get. I’m also hoping to get into the honors program.

3.84 GPA UW
Dual Enroll College & High School (Will graduate with an AA, though I’m applying as a freshman. This just means I took more classes, and more advanced classes)
SAT 2008: 680 Reading, 780 Writing, 660 Math
SAT 2009: 680 Reading, 700 Writing, 770 Math

ACT: 34

I’ve been a leader in my youth group, active in my church, done volunteering and am a member of National Honors Society.

I would love to go to American, but it would be hard to turn down full tuition, plus stipends for laptop, study abroad, etc. from other schools. I’m hoping to recieve a scholarship from AU leaning closer to full tuition, but i just don’t know if that will happen :P

Your stats are just a little better than my son’s - he got a full tuition scholarship, we just pay room and board. He wasn’t a National Merit Finalist - only commended. So, I would guess that they would offer you full tuition, but I am not the school.

Katy: Did your son win some form of scholarship? Did he apply somehow differently? Are you a specific minority that would assist in aid, or did you just get the financial package along with the acceptance letter? Please let me know how this works, exactly. (if you dont mind).

My daughter has similar stats to the OP, and I am kind of counting out American since she has not heard anything from Frederick Douglass, and even if she did, she is not minority or live in the DC area (both qualifiers for that scholarship). She will not get any financial aid, so it is all about Merit.

Thanks.

Does anyone know if it’s still possible to designate AU as my top school? I’m a Nat’l Achievement Finalist, and was just wondering if I’d have to mail admissions or something.
