I am a Alabama resident who is planning to attend Florida State University in the Fall of 2014. Therefore I am a senior and also an African American. Are there any scholarships or scholarship sites anyone can recommend? Any financial aid can assist with my college career.

The best scholarships are given by the colleges themselves, however FSU gives limited merit aid and you would need to be near the top of the applicant pool to qualify.

I can’t say how up-to-date it is, but here is a list of minority-targeted third party scholarships:

OOS public colleges are often unaffordable due to high OOS tuition and limited aid for non-residents.

Will you be relying on scholarships to pay for college or will your parents pay most of the college costs?

what are your stats?

@mom2collegekids , my parents are able to pay for most. However, if there are scholarships that’ll pay for college fully that’s even better.

Thank you for the link @BobWallace

The COA for an OOS student at FSU is $38,000 per year. If your parents have said that they will pay nearly all of that cost, then any scholarships will be gravy. good luck!

@mom2collegekids Haha Thank You so much for the information.

Don’t overlook other schools. If you have high GPA and SAT/ACT scores, several schools in Alabama will give you automatic merit scholarships.

If you want to study engineering, note that Florida State and Florida A&M share an engineering division. But Florida A&M costs less, and has automatic large merit scholarships for high enough GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

Yes, be sure to apply to some Alabama schools as safeties.

Will you be a National Achievement scholar?

@ucbalumnus Thank You for the advice. I will keep that in mind.
