Greetings and good evening all. I would appreciate any information on which scholarships are sent directly to the winner in the form of a check or the like, not to the school. Much appreciation in advance.

All my son's scholarship checks have been sent to him and are also made out to the college.

Sorry for this answer... It depends. Some go directly to the school, some go to you in your name. Just be aware that scholarships in your name if declared to the school can effect other things at school (grants, work study, etc). So the best advice for scholarships presented to you directly is practice the theory of don't ask.. don't tell.

If your child is an athlete in college, make certain that any scholarships (especially one from the local sports booster society) is made out to the college and not to the student. You can be ruled ineligible for competition otherwise. I am not 100% clear if you could get in trouble if the award was in NO WAY connected to sports, but if it is at all, then it has to be made out to the college.

I think most colleges have a rule that you have to let them know about outside scholarships, or risk losing any other financial aid you might be getting. Some schools are pretty humane about letting your outside money count toward the student's self-help portion first.
