Scholarships that Pay Directly to Student

hey everyone!! I’m looking for ways to help my parents out with the cost of duke, but our outside scholarship policy is a little tricky to navigate.

When an outside scholarship check arrives at their office, they first use the money to cover any loan expectation or work study expectation that is built into my financial aid package. Then, they use that money to replace grant money (so essentially they reduce my grant). The money only reduces family contribution if the entire grant is eliminated by accumulated outside scholarship money. Does anyone know of any outside scholarships that pay the student directly?

thanks for any answers <3

It’s not really that tricky. Any outside scholarships that pay you directly still have to be reported to the school.

Yes, you will have to report any outside scholarships to the college. There are tax implications too, depending on how that outside money gets spent.

They will not send you the check. It sounds like you are trying to cheat the system by not notifying the college. That would get you expelled.

Agreed with above. In other words, there is no advantage of getting outside scholarships that exceed your loan amount if you are receiving grant money from the institution. Don’t try to find workarounds to this - it’s dishonest.
